                                  Thoughts by Connie Felter

This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King: let the heaven’s ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad! It is a beloved old hymn with timeless meaning.

Once again, I found myself leaning into my seat Sunday morning as Bob Raborn began the Prelude. I have no doubt the Holy Spirit anointed Bob’s fingers as he played the piano and transformed this traditional old Father’s Day hymn into something timely and powerful – a much needed word for today’s world.

Life is not easy; our world is broken, and it is difficult to live amid brokenness and strife. I will be honest, some days I do not know which way is up and I seem to just muddle through. But it is times like Sunday morning that pick me back up, that help me focus, that reminds me of the holy ordinary. Yes, God’s Holy Spirit turned ordinary moments into holy moments as I held on to the thought The Lord is King; let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad!

I hope you will pick up a hymnal and read the words of this beloved hymn. I pray these words, anointed by God’s Spirit will strengthen, encourage and sustain you, and that you too experience the Holy in the Ordinary. Think About It…

Disciples Engage with God through the Sacraments

Holy Baptism & Holy Communion are the ordinary ways God gives us saving grace.

Baptism is our primary connection to Christ; through which we receive the gifts of salvation, the Holy Spirit, and rebirth as a child of God.  Each time you wash your hands (and you should be washing your hands a lot these days) say aloud: I remember that I am baptized, and I am thankful.

Holy Communion is the chief way we receive grace for the forgiveness of our sins, and the power to live as God’s children.  Every time you eat bread, and every time you drink from a cup, remember the Lord’s death, and pray that soon you can once again gather around his banqueting table.

Sunday August 8 @ 10:30 am
Our 2020 class will be confirmed in the faith.
If God is calling you to be baptized, join the Church, or transfer your membership contact Dr Speegle (662-889-7000) today.
Disciples engage with God through the Holy Scripture

When we read and study the bible; we learn more about God, Jesus speaks to us, and we receive grace to love and obey him.

Bible Study = Tuesday June 30 @ 6:30 pm (ending promptly at 7)
This digitally integrated bible study will be live in person in the sanctuary and online at Facebook Live.
Chris will be moderating the Facebook live chat so that you can ask questions (and hopefully answer some) live – he’ll even let you ask anonymously.
We will pick up The Absolute Basics of the Christian Faith, -- Chapter 14.
Please follow the virus mitigation guidelines if you plan to attend live and in person.

Read the daily lectionary to prepare for Sunday.
Daily devotions help us engage with the scripture

  • Our church-wide yearly devotional is New Morning Mercies, by Paul David Tripp (available on Amazon).  You can join the Facebook Discussion Group by going to the Church’s Facebook page, then to groups, then choose “join the group.”  For help joining the group contact Chris Hart (601-810-5030).
Disciples Engage with God through Prayer and Fasting

Prayer is how we converse with God who relates to us as our loving Father.  Prayer, fasting, and contemplation are ways we participate in our relationship with God.

The Church is open throughout the week for private prayer.
Remember to wash your hands, keep your distance, and call a staff person to let you in if needed.

Good prayer practices include:
  1. Praying the Lord’s Prayer daily
  2. Praying grace over meals
  3. Praying upon rising in the morning and before sleeping at night
  4. Praying throughout the week for our prayer concerns.
When you pray, please remember:

In this time, we pray:

For the health workers tending the seriously ill

for the scientists working on a vaccination

for the researchers analysing data and identifying trends

for the media outlets working to communicate reality

for the supermarket workers, hygiene and sanitation providers

for the good news stories of recoveries and effective planning

for the recognition that isolation doesn’t need to mean loneliness

for the notes, cards, letters, and packages offering help and support

for the internet and telephones and technology that connects

for the awakened appreciation of what is truly important

Thanks be to God.

For those who are unwell and concerned for loved ones

for those who were already very anxious

for those immune suppressed or compromised

for those vulnerable because of underlying conditions

for those in the ‘most at risk to coronavirus’ categories

for those watching their entire income stream dry up

for those who have no choice but to go out to work

for those who are afraid to be at home

for those who are more lonely than they've ever been

for those who are bereaved and grieving.

God be their healer, comfort and protection,

be their strength, shield and provision

be their security, safety and close companion

And raise up your Church

to be your well-washed hands and faithful feet

to be present to the pain

to respond with love in action

if even from a safe distance.

God, in your mercy,

Hear our prayer.
