WDM awaiting Phase 4 re-opening with exhibit development

As businesses and storefronts across the community begin to slowly re-open their doors, in accordance with the Re-open Saskatchewan Plan, one local staple still awaiting their return to business is the Western Development Museum (WDM).

The Museum is part of Phase 4 of the provincial re-open plan, which has yet to be officially given a date.

Manager of the WDM, Joyce Smith said while it’s been tough being closed down for the last two months, one possible bright spot has been the extra time the museum staff had to focus on larger projects that may have been put on the back-burner.   Read more...

S.A.C.H.M Virtual Heritage Museum tour
The Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum's primary purpose is to honour the history and contributions made of African Descent residents of Saskatchewan. Secondly, they also support those currently making an impact in Saskatchewan.

Through research, collecting and documenting, the contribution of African and African descent persons in Saskatchewan over the last 100 plus years is now available in their virtual museum.

Western Development Museum hosting virtual summer camps for kids
With the coronavirus pandemic putting a halt to many of its events and programs, the Western Development Museum is hosting virtual summer camps for kids.

The WDM, the largest human history museum in Saskatchewan, has branches in Yorkton, North Battleford, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.

Each branch is contributing content and materials, giving people access to online activities that will focus on educating kids on Saskatchewan history through games, stories, crafts and more. Read more...

Remai Modern launches You Inspire Us initiative to show gratitude to essential workers
In a salute to essential workers, who put their health on the line to serve others during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Remai Modern is offering free memberships through the You Inspire Us initiative. The art gallery hopes providing the free memberships will help ensure essential workers have access and can enjoy the exhibitions, art activities and more than 1,800 diverse programs offered at the gallery year-round. Essential workers from Saskatchewan are eligible to apply for a free membership — for either an individual or a family — which will be valid for one year from the museum's re-opening date. Governor General's History Awards
Canada's History is seeking nominations and applications for the Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Community Programming. This award recognizes community-based projects that promote public engagement in history. Applications are evaluated on their impact, innovation, and contribution to a greater public understanding of Canadian history. Two recipients (French and English) will receive $2,500 each.

If you know a community history project, we encourage you to submit a nomination or start an application today!

Applications are due on July 15, 2020.

Culture Days 2020
Culture Days is extending beyond the traditional Culture Days Weekend to a more inclusive and interactive 4-week schedule of activities. Kicking off September 25th and running until October 25th.

Culture Days is encouraging organizers to develop virtual or small group activities that will engage people in the arts and culture in their own communities and nationwide! (Gathering sizes will be based on public health restrictions for particular regions).  Online registration opens June 8, 2020.

SaskCulture has developed sponsorship opportunities to support Culture Days activities identified by communities. (The Culture Days Funding Assistance Program has been suspended). Due to the COVID-19 situation we had to re-evaluate and adapt how these opportunities would work going forward. This year, SaskCulture will provide:

Culture Days Hub Sponsorship
- This sponsorship is aimed at supporting two or more partners in a community to host Culture Days activities during the 4-week Culture Days period, by either holding: a. all virtual activities, b. all small group gatherings (based on public health restrictions), or c. a combination of both virtual and small group gatherings.

- It is providing a sponsorship, rather than a grant, because community applications will be selected based on location (only one application from a community) in order to encourage partnerships, support the continued success of Culture Days hubs, and distribute funds more evenly throughout the province.

- This sponsorship can support artists/cultural workers, technical resources, promotion and or supplies. In the case of small group gatherings, the sponsorship can also support venue and sanitation costs.

- An application will be available shortly through SaskCulture’s Online Grant Platform.

- There will be no fixed deadline.
