Little Ship Club of Canterbury

The Little Ship Club of Canterbury is a branch of Naval Point Club Lyttelton. We are a fun group of sailors, who gather on a regular basis to discuss articles of interest, listen to key note speakers and organising events both on and off the water related to our common involvement with the sea and those who sail on it. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in any of our events and activities.
Check out our
website and like our Facebook page to be kept up to date with everything going on

Kia Ora everyone,

REMINDER - Please join us tonight Thursday 18 June. Bar open from 7pm - back at Naval Point! It will be so good to see everyone after such a long period away. We have got Tim Bloy coming to talk about single handed sailing set up. The bar will be open, there will be lots of friendly sailors to come and chat to, we will get the fire going and you get to also listen to a great guest speaker! Bar open from 7pm, talk starts at 7.30. All welcome. Bring your friends along too.

Bill Norrie the solo Canadian sailor on board his boat Pixie is making steady progress across the Pacific. You can track him here.

The safety rules of sailing are due for an update. If you'd like to give some feedback/suggestions on the "Cat" regulations you are welcome to put in a submission. More info here. Yachting New Zealand are given a directive from Maritime NZ to do the safety inspections for recreational vessels departing NZ, or racing around the coast.

When was the last time you did a Man Overboard drill? Perhaps we should have a practical safety session on the water one day when its a bit warmer. Let me know if you'd be interested and I'll see what we can arrange. In the mean time here is an interesting article about MOB techniques.

If like me you are interested in Polynesian ocean navigation, you might be interested in joining this free online event - Kupe - Voyaging by the Stars on Monday afternoon. Revered traditional navigator Sir Hekenukumai (‘Hek’) Busby reconnects his crew with ancient star navigation traditions to help them prepare for a 1,800-mile ocean voyage in his traditional double-hulled waka, Te Aurere. More info here.

We are looking for some speakers or topics for later in the year. If you have something you'd love to hear about or know of someone who'd have a great story to share. please let me know! And if you haven't paid a sub yet for this financial year, we'd really appreciate your $20 to help us buy some small gifts for our speakers and assist with the club's running expenses. The bank account details are below.

Can't wait to see you all again really soon!

Cheers

French Farm Visitors Mooring
The Akaroa Cruisers’ Group has now established a Guest Mooring it at the extreme south-easterly corner of the French Farm mooring field, in Akaroa harbour. It differs from moorings usually found in the harbour, being specifically designed for comparatively short-term occupation by visiting vessels, usually when the crew is living aboard.
This mooring is available to Group members (on a ‘donations’ basis), to casual visitors and to those who have booked through
www.moorings4u.com – this in reverse order of priority. The website has precise locational details. A ‘tag’ on the pick-up buoy of the mooring will provide contact numbers – those who want to use it – and haven’t booked – should check availability by calling one of the numbers shown.
We have established some rules of use – see the website for particulars. these may well change as we see how things pan out. The most important thing to remember (for the time being) is that no part of the mooring is to be secured on board – vessels are to secure to the protected loop at the top of the main buoy using their own lines; 4m maximum from buoy to system-head fitting. Use of French farm Aquatic Club facilities must be arranged separately with that club – contact details can be found on the clubhouse notice-board near the road entrance.
The Group has been able to provide this mooring through the generosity and hard work of a surprisingly large number of its members and supporters. The continuous existence of this facility will of course depend on both patronage and user contributions. The Group hopes that it will be seen as useful by those cruising the Peninsula.
