Dear Basketry Community,
The National Basketry Organization stands with all those who seek equality and we are committed to fostering change. NBO will address the social justice issues brought so clearly into focus by Black Lives Matter demonstrations across the country and around the world.
With greater awareness and thoughtful action, NBO will develop specific steps that we will take to work for social change. We are committed to engage a broad range of perspectives and to empower voices through artistic expression. Listening, learning, and looking inward, we will establish principles, goals, and benchmarks, reporting back to you regularly as we work to faithfully live up to our mission statement.
Basketry by its nature is a broad field, with roots on this continent since ancient times; a field that also includes traditions brought here by cultures from around the globe. Contemporary basketry encompasses a range of makers working from both ancestral heritage and experimental perspectives. NBO resolves to seek new partnerships and collaborations with a diverse range of artists, scholars, and curators as we strive for an organization truly representative of the rich diversity of this country.
As the NBO board develops our plan of action, we would like to hear from the basketry community with your ideas and recommendations on ways we can become a more truly equitable organization. Please email Carol Eckert or Pamela Morton with your thoughts.
