Its nice to be getting into more normal territory after lockdown and to see so many activities and events opening up and starting up again.
Thanks to all the lovely people who sent in articles.
We have information from two schools in this newsletter, some discussion of ancient trees uncovered in the area - a range of notices and a little bit about the General Election coming our way in September.

A FOREST UNDER OUR FEET
A few years ago, Craig Pauling (now an ECAN Councilor) told

Halswell Residents Association about some native tree stumps excavated during stormwater basin excavation at Longhurst. Unfortunately, it seems that these were not preserved. However, over the past few months more stumps have been excavated. University of Auckland kindly identified the tree species for us - it is matai. Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has now granted us the money to radiocarbon date these trees, and the results are due early August. NGĀ PUNA WAI SPORTS HUB HOME TO NETSAL CENTRE
Council has decided Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub will be the home of Netsal’s new indoor 10-court facility.
The Council agreed to issue Netsal a 33-year lease on the land, subject to conditions around traffic, lighting and access. A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan will also be developed to consider matters around parking on and around the site.
The decision was based upon the Hearings Panel recommendation, who considered the 92 submissions received during the public consultation process earlier this year. Of the 92 submissions received by the Council on the Netsal Centre proposal, 76 per cent were in favour, and 24 per cent were opposed to granting the lease.
Netsal is an organisation jointly set up by Mainland Football Federation and the Christchurch Netball Centre, and would develop, own and operate the facility as a new home for both sports.

Libraries issue call to return overdue books
More than 120,000 books are back on Christchurch City Libraries shelves. However, a significant number of the loans prior to the lockdown period remain outstanding. Customers are being asked to check around their homes for any books or other library items that may have been forgotten while our libraries have been closed to the public.

We at Recreate NZ are starting up our new Farm to Plate Module at the Halswell Hall this coming July. For those who do not know what Recreate NZ is, we are a non-profit organisation that works with individuals with intellectual disabilities to provide recreational

We at Recreate NZ are starting up our new Farm to Plate Module at the Halswell Hall this coming July. For those who do not know what Recreate NZ is, we are a non-profit organisation that works with individuals with intellectual disabilities to provide recreational programmes and opportunities.

Our Farm to Plate Module is a new mid-week opportunity for our participants to learn about where their food comes from, find useful ways to repurpose their food, experiment with recipes, and learn essential kitchen skills. We will be harvesting our own produce and making things such as jams, relishes, pickled foods, and food preserves.
We are reaching out to our local community, in the spirit of repurposing and being a non-profit, to see if any of our community members may be able to help us in our start up. We are looking for any second-hand items that can help us cut start up costs, and possibly help you clean out your cupboards. Below is our wishlist and we are very thankful for any donations we may receive. If you are interested in helping in any way, please reach out to Mike@recreate.org.nz or contact (021) 225-3924.

We are now enrolling at Hillmorton High School. At Hillmorton High School our mission is clear. To inspire academic excellence, leadership and a love of learning. OAKLANDS TE KURA O OWAKA
Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka, or Oaklands School as it was called, opened in 1964. Since then generations of local families have attended. Recently a story appeared in the Western News about one of the original school teachers, Mrs Diane Jellyman (now called Diane Carson), whose granddaughters attend the school today. Diane taught in the school’s original red brick blocks, which are now being totally renovated for a new generation as part of the school’s redevelopment. The red blocks are the last part of the redevelopment to be finished – at this stage by Term 4. Diane shared a picture of staff from 1966, below. If you were a student and want to share some images or memories email rebuild@oaklands.school.nz. It will be great to share them when the school celebrates finishing the redevelopment later this year.

HALSWELL POTTERY GROUP

We are delighted to confirm that our gallery at 9 Candys Road is once again open at the week-ends, but please note the new hours of 11 am - 3 pm. Get Creative Craft Group will break for the school holidays after our final gathering on 2 July and will resume at the start of Term 3 on Thursday 23 July. We meet each week at the South West Baptist Church in Balcairn Street on Thursday mornings from 9.30 - 11.30am. New people welcome. WISTERIA PROJECT
Calling for volunteers for a fun working bee pruning eight neglected wisteria. These are on public land in Halswell (with permission).
The plan is to do it on nice sunny day in early July.
Someone with experience in Wisteria would be especially welcome.
The work will vary from raking leaves and prunings, to pruning, and some work on stepladders.

HALSWELL HALL – THE CORNERSTONE OF THE HALSWELL COMMUNITY FOR MORE
THAN 100 YEARS
Our Committee is embracing this time to generate “community” in our local area and we look forward to the inaugural “Halswell’s Got Talent” night to be held on Sunday 16th August. See the separate information about this event and how to purchase tickets on Eventbrite. Interest has been strong, and we are looking forward to celebrating bringing our community together for a fun night. Raffles, Spot Prizes and some great entertainment.
We are also planning a Spring Community event with local entertainment, quality market stalls and displays by local people, Mike Pero Bouncy Castle, BBQ run by the Halswell Scouts and local “Coffee and Cruz” mobile coffee van on site. More details next month 😊

Your Community Hall is run by a small group of volunteers who oversee the bookings and maintenance of this excellent Community facility. It is owned by our Community and we always welcome any enquiries regarding bookings for functions or social activities. At the Halswell Hall we offer a range of facilities with the main Hall having a capacity of 200. We also have an excellent meeting room (The Sunbeam
Lounge) which can accommodate up to 50. This adjoins our upgraded kitchen and is ideal for smaller groups. The meeting room is readily available, and we welcome your enquiry. For any enquiries about availability or our facilities please email us at halswellhallchch@gmail.com.
We still have the ability to engage more members, volunteers and Committee to help oversee the routine running of this valuable Community facility for the coming year. WOOL, KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS
we are a group of retirees working for some of the disadvantaged people in the Christchurch region. Jerseys for pre-schoolers, (peggy square and crocheted blankets), hats and other warm clothing. Currently we are very short of knitting yarn and looking for helpers and donations of any size balls or parts of balls or oddments of wool. If you are able to help, please ring 03 338 5030.

HALSWELL DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

The Halswell District Lions Club has been providing service to the Community and beyond for nearly forty years, and is part of the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members we have served those in need for 104 years.
To continue our good work we need new members, recently our District the upper part of the South Island including the West Coast raised $15,000 for the Cyclone Harry victims in Fiji. This was spent on village water tanks, and additional 20ltr carry water containers, Food, clothing and other essential items, were distributed.

Locally we donated $4000 to the Hillmorton High school for outdoor equipment. Our club made more recent grants, to the Salvation Army and the Food Bank during the lockdown.
WE cannot continue to do this without members. We need people to help us help others. WE say “where there is a need there is a Lion” can you give us a few hours a month.
We meet at the Bowling club in the Domain on the first Wednesday of the month for a Meal and usually a Guest Speaker, the meal cost is $25. If you are interested phone Lynley the Monday before (027 690 0659) that you would like to attend so we can advise the caterer. But if this does not suit you we meet on an alternate night being a business meeting on the third Wednesday of the month to discuss our Service projects and fundraising activities for the coming month.
