From the chairman:

Dear members,

I hope you’ve all been keeping well during the very unusual past few months. NEaT has had to cancel or postpone some events, which has been disappointing, but the coronavirus crisis has also forced us to learn to do new things, such as holding our AGM and other events entirely online. We’re hoping to get back to some form of normality in the next few months with events in person, but we’re also prepared for the situation to change at short notice. At any rate, the sun is now shining, the days here in the north are long and the lakes are just about warm enough to swim in, at least for a minute or two at a time. Next week it will be Midsummer (juhannus, midsommar) in Finland and Sweden, and then the following week in Norway and Denmark (sankthans). Enjoy the fine weather, the great outdoors and your holiday, if you’re taking one. Have a great summer!

Ian Mac Eochagáin
Chairman of the board
Board meeting summary

The NEaT board meets four-six times a year to decide on strategy, key events and the organization’s finances. Our board members are listed here.

The last board meeting was held online on Tuesday 2 June and the following matters were decided:
  • To elect Kate Sotejeff-Wilson as vice chairperson of the board. Congratulations, Kate!
  • To strengthen our efforts to connect with our members outside the Helsinki region of Finland in all the Nordic countries
  • When and where to hold the summer picnic (8 August, Seurasaari, Helsinki — more on that below)
  • To take note of the committees’ activities
  • To hold the next board meeting on Tuesday 8 September, either in person in Helsinki or online, as circumstances allow
NEaT’s annual picnic 8 August 2020

Join us on our annual picnic on the 8th of August in Seurasaari, Helsinki. We’ll meet in the afternoon around 2 pm in one of the big open fields

Bring your own blanket and your own picnic! Unfortunately, we won’t be able to share drinks or food this year. Any games and activities that we can play at a safe distance are welcome! See you in Seurasaari in August.
What do the media need to know about translation?

NEaT member Minna Kujamäki, a University Lecturer in English (translation and interpretation) at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu, told Journalisti.fi that the unidiomatic Finnish produced by journalists when producing news based on foreign-language sources can be compared to the errors that first-year translation students make. Read more on the NEaT website.

NEaT podcasters?

The NEaT board would like to know whether any of our members produce podcasts. We are exploring this and would love to learn from your expertise. If you have a podcast, suitable content/idea or equipment (camera, microphone, editing software) that you want to share with other members, please contact Kate at kate.sotejeff-wilson@cantab.net.
NEaT needs you -- Are you available for work?

Are you on the NEaT Members Available for Work list? Even if you are, you might want to update your information. If you are looking for a linguist with particular skills, don’t forget to look here first.
Are you available for a committee?

If the members are the lifeblood of NEaT, the committees are the heart, lungs and liver. (Let’s not take this metaphor too far… can you match the committee to the vital organ?) If you have a bit of extra time and would like to give something back, get to know your colleagues better, and shape the future of our organisation, this is a great way to start. Some committees meet only online or by email, while others meet physically a few times a year.

The communication committee coordinates and provides content for the NEaT website, these newsletters, and our social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. There’s a lot to do every week, so we would really appreciate a couple of helping hands! Please contact Virve at virve@capecontext.com if you feel you could write blurbs, posts and blog articles for NEaT members, provide graphic design for our materials, or take photos and curate our image bank, for example.

The events committee does the fun stuff! Of course, we organize the Christmas party and the NEaT picnic. But we also need some serious eyes to the future. For example, would you like to help plan the first NEaT conference? Do you have an idea for a star academic or other speaker to bring to Helsinki? We need your help at all levels, from planning an entire conference structure to bringing napkins. We also would like to find people interested in creating chat groups. Join us by contacting Julie at julie.uusinarkaus@helsinki.fi

The cooperation committee is responsible for developing relationships with other organizations, be they in other Nordic countries or further afield. We need more input to this committee from people living in other Nordic countries, so don’t hesitate to contact Ian at iainmace@gmail.com if you want to join this committee.

The education committee develops seminars, roundtables and workshops for NEaT members. This is a very active and eager group who are in touch with what language professionals want to learn and discuss. Do you have ideas for future professional development sessions? Do you want to share your obsession with parentheses? If so, get in touch with Alice at alice.lehtinen@altexta-editing.com.
