This is the 49th issue of Vicious Shivers,
a (mostly) weekly newsletter for fans of my work.

I’m sorry I let you get attacked by a werewolf, and you know, ended the world.
Hey, folks! It’s July! How ‘bout that! I would have sworn it wasn’t even Hellvember yet! Feels like Awfulvember the 1st was just yesterday! Between viruses and systemic racism and men in comics and horror and publishing acting like fools, time sure is flying. Hopefully, you and yours are holding up as well as possible. Me, I’ve had a tough time the last several weeks. A hard time getting my footing and finding my balance and getting any real work done. Seems like something I’ve been repeating over and over. This isn’t even a song I like, but I just keep singing it.

I did finish my short story for CENTRALIA, and I’m very pleased with it. I’ll be polishing it over the next week or so, probably posting it on Patreon for my patrons to read in advance. It’s a tale of necromancers and ghost trains and wraiths. It centers around the massacre that took place in Centralia, Missouri, in 1864. It will appear in an anthology you’ll be hearing more about in the next few weeks.

I have also been working on finalizing a Kickstarter for GOLDEN DAWN, which I will be launching in just a couple of weeks. GOLDEN DAWN is a cosmic horror/steampunk tale written by JimmyZ Johnston and myself and illustrated by Federico de Luca. We’re Kickstarting the first TWO issues in one campaign, because we’re that far ahead on the book! Stay tuned.

This week, I came up with a fun little project that has blossomed into something weird and crazy and fun. I put a call out to artists to help with bringing it to life, and I received... nearly 200 responses. I’ll be talking more about this soon. It’s moving fast!

THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR has been moving along, too! I received the final lettering file for the massive graphic novel. I don’t know the exact release date just yet, but I can’t wait for you to see this! I’m really excited for this book. Cat Farris did such a beautiful job with it. Aditya Bidikar lettered the book, giving it a fun style. When you’re dealing with ghoul-talk, it’s important to have a fun style after all!

I’m working! I’m working! I’m just not very focused. The next few days will be spent focused on an original graphic novel that has not been announced yet. It’s an all ages book, part action, part horror, all fun.

In just a couple of days, it will be Cindy’s birthday. She’s a July 4th baby! I WILL be taking that day off completely to relax and hang out in the pool and drink margaritas and eat lots of food. If you didn’t know, she means the world to me. We’re not having a big party (because... you know... the darkest timeline) though she deserves one. She has ordained that I will get her no gifts. All she wants is to record a new episode of The Bunngalow. So that’s what we’re doing. Her birthday, and she wants to give a gift to you, the people who listen to our silly little podcast.

These days, I do almost all of my writing on my iPad. I don’t have a laptop and I just like the way my iPad keyboard feels. Until two minutes ago, though, I had not turned off the device’s autocorrect function, which resulted in weirdly awesome mistakes. For example, AC Zamudio just sent me an email telling me how much she enjoyed my description of light “pooping” out of a wizard’s fingertips.

I live to bring joy.

I don’t think I show it enough or say it enough (because I’m emotionally stunted) but I hope all my family and friends and collaborators and readers know just how much I appreciate them. I really don’t think I could get through this nightmare timeline without you. I’m here for you, come Hell or high water. I don’t necessarily say that often. Maybe I don’t always show it like I should. But I am. And I thank you for being there for me.

REANIMATOR

Ok, folks. This one is IMPORTANT! As you may know, I have a REANIMATOR comic at Dynamite. They plan to  crowdfund its release. However, they will not launch the project until they reach a threshold number of people who have signed up for updates. If you have interest in seeing this new sequel to the original Reanimator stories, please visit this link and sign up. If we don't get enough interest, who knows if anyone will ever see the book.

WEEKLY OBSESSIONS

This week I'm...

Reading - I've been finishing up some of the many novels I started over the last couple of months. I’m also listening to Clive Barker’s BOOKS OF BLOOD as I go on my walks. Wow. Those stories are just so great. Listening to them gives me flashbacks to picking up those paperbacks at Waldenbooks. You know, the ones with the twisted and colorful faces on the covers. I can so vividly remember reading them for the first time. So great.

Watching - My son and I watched THE HOBBIT trilogy together. Then, we moved on to the 1989 BATMAN flick. I re-watched DOCTOR SLEEP. And I watched the Soska Sisters’ remake of RABID, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

Playing - Still playing D&D once or twice a week. Last week, I almost had a total party kill thanks to an Ochre Jelly. But I felt merciful and let them scrape by.

Drinking - Not a lot. I had a Lynchburg Lemonade last night right before I went to bed.
