Early Edge California Applauds US Supreme Court’s Ruling on DACA

Early Edge California applauds today’s decision from the Supreme Court of the United States that upholds the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Enacted in 2012, the DACA program protects immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from deportation and allows them to legally work and study. In 2017, President Trump indicated he would end the DACA program, stating that creating or maintaining the program was beyond the appropriate reach of presidential power. Today’s Supreme Court ruling indicates that this was not a sufficient reason to end the program. The Administration will be permitted to provide additional reasons for ending the program to a lower court; however, given the timing, the ruling effectively protects DACA until after the November election.

“As an immigrant myself, I really value the opportunities that this country brings, and I’m happy to hear that more than 200,000 Californians who are Dreamers, including many vulnerable families and Early Learning teachers who support young children, will be protected by today’s ruling,” stated Patricia Lozano, Executive Director of Early Edge California

Early Edge California stands with Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xavier Becerra in their efforts to advocate for a permanent solution for Dreamers and all immigrants who contribute so much to California’s economy, culture, and society.

Early Edge California and Kidango Praise California’s Legislature for Adopting a Budget that Preserves Early Learning Programs

Earlier this week, the California Legislature passed a budget that recognizes childcare and Early Learning programs as the backbone of the state and the economy. To meet its constitutional obligation to pass a budget by June 15, the Assembly and Senate adopted a budget agreement with critical protections for children and families. The budget bill they are presenting to Governor Gavin Newsom, along with a trailer bill that would generate roughly $4.4 billion in state revenues from changes to tax laws, ensures that California’s Early Learning infrastructure is preserved for the state’s neediest children and their families.

Early Edge California Interviews Pre-K teacher and SEAL training graduate Patricia Corona-Martinez

Patricia Corona-Martinez is a pre-K teacher at Longfellow Elementary in Azusa Unified School District who just finished a school year unlike any other. For the second half of the year, she was engaged in supporting her students through distance learning. Ms. Corona-Martinez has also recently completed a year-long training through SEAL (Sobrato Early Academic Language), which has, to date, trained over 1,600 teachers in California in its model for supporting language learning. Ms. Corona-Martinez’s district is among those across California that were able to engage in SEAL training as a result of the $5 million 2018 budget allocation for Dual Language Learner Professional Development. Engaging in this training has helped to equip her in meeting the needs of Dual Language Learners (DLLs) and their families.
