Welcome to the first of a new Equity & Sustainability intersectional newsletter

The College of the Environment's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion office and UW Sustainability have been exploring ways to create more collaboration and intersections between the people at the University of Washington who are working on diversity & equity initiatives, and those working on sustainability efforts. UW Sustainability Action PlanUW's Sustainability Action Plan

On July 1st, the UW-wide Sustainability Action Plan was launched. Our goal is to make inclusion central to our implementation and engage with diverse groups on our campuses. Our passionate students, faculty and staff will be key to making our plan achievable, and we are hopeful to continue dialogue and conversation for advancing UW’s sustainability efforts in an equitable manner.

In consultation with faculty, staff and students across our campuses, the Sustainability Action Plan is grounded on the guiding principles of ensuring student literacy in sustainability, choosing our research conscientiously, keeping equity and inclusion at the center, using our natural resources responsibly and decarbonizing our energy source.

Throughout this inaugural year, we will engage our campuses with virtual and on-campus conversations, while continuing to seek input from the Sustainability Action Plan annual survey. Equity and inclusion is central to guiding implementation of the action plan. One of the key actions we will be taking is supporting our University in developing a UW-wide definition of sustainability, which will provide platforms for conversations and dialogue.
