Entomologists of Color
People of color are underrepresented in many areas of STEM education, and more so from professional societies, partly because of the cost of membership. From the EntoPOC website: "Entomologists of Color strives to close this gap by providing POC paid memberships to various entomological societies, making participation, scientific communication, and outreach more inclusive to POC." Glasswing butterflies
DEEP LOOK (KQED) recently released a new video on glasswing butterflies (Greta oto) featuring research by UC Berkeley PhD student Aaron Pomerantz. The colors on butterfly wings result from layers of minute scales that can advertise a foul taste or act as camouflage. These butterflies take a different approach by being partially transparent, yet not shiny. Read the story behind the video.

Oak moths return to Cal campus
The California oak moth, or oakworm, Phryganidia californica, can defoliate entire live oak trees in short order. The trees almost always return as vigorous as ever, and the moths move on to another site. However, this is the second year in a row that the oak moths are going through an outbreak on the UC Berkeley campus. Eggs laid now will defoliate more trees this fall. Citizen Scientists capture data 50k bees
Notes from Nature is a citizen science platform for anyone interested in biology and natural history to help capture label data from museum specimens. Our dedicated team recently completed 50,000 leaf-cutter bee specimens from the Essig Museum, representing 53 countries and 45 US states, collected from 1892-2015. We are now working on specimens from CDFA, one of our CalBug partners. Photo: Joyce Gross

Coronavirus closure update
Essig Museum staff continue to work from home as part of the county's shelter in place orders. However, we are preparing for our gradual return to campus to resume specimen loans, research visits, and outreach and education efforts. Thank you for your patience and support.

Essig Brunch Seminar Series
Essig Brunch is on summer hiatus.
Our move to online presentations via Zoom to end the academic year was hugely successful. This fall we plan to continue offering remote viewing for those who cannot attend talks in person.

A weekly seminar series run by the Entomology Students Organization featuring local and visiting researchers presenting a wide range of entomology topics. Open to the public.
