We honor the memory of the enslaved African Americans who found out they were free, thus ending the practice of slavery in the United States. Now we know the battle has not been fully won, yet we still pause to remember. Remember who came before us. Remember the triumph. Remember the struggle. Most of all remember that our ancestors toiled and survived. They survived. They did not give up. And we are a testament to that persistence. We keep moving. We keep resisting. We keep living.
The late Coretta Scott King reminded us that: "Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation."
We will win.
