Compost Transport:
City To Farm

By Brendan Harrison

In an effort to reduce methane emissions from landfills and increase organics recycling, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law SB 1383 in 2016. This landmark law has an end goal of reducing landfill disposal of organic waste by 75% below 2014 levels by 2025 (Lara, 2016). To meet this goal, California must significantly expand its organics recycling capacity, and likely will rely on aerobic composting as a primary method for managing this diverted waste (CalRecycle, 2019).

Finetuning
Food Waste Composting

By Nora Goldstein
The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA) in Kingston, New York, decided in 2012 that it wanted to pilot test composting of food waste. Discarded food comprised about 15 percent of the county’s commercial waste stream at the time. The pilot, which began in July 2012, was designed to evaluate processing food waste from large quantity waste generators in the county and determine the feasibility of a much larger composting operation. UCRRA received a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to process 1,000 cubic yards (cy) of food waste and 10,000 cy of yard trimmings. The composting operation is at UCRRA’s materials recovery facility and transfer station.

Turning Biowaste Challenges Into Opportunities

The European Environment Agency released a new report this spring, Bio-Waste in Europe — Turning Challenges Into Opportunities, that provides an overview of biowaste prevention, generation, collection and treatment in Europe. The report is filled with statistics and case studies from a wide range of EU member countries. Its purpose, note the authors, is to “support countries by sharing experiences and best practices.”

Community Composting Key In Baltimore’s
Food Waste Strategy

The City of Baltimore, Maryland’s Food Waste Recovery Strategy aims to reduce commercial food waste in Baltimore City by 50% and residential food waste by 80% by 2040. Baltimore generates 430,000 tons of trash annually, and the majority is incinerated, contributing to the city’s high asthma rate. At the same time, nearly one in four Baltimore residents does not have a reliable supply of food, notes the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), more than twice the national average.

Clean Materials Economy

The Center for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI) released a blueprint for transforming the Pacific Northwest’s waste system into “a world-class model that delivers widespread economic, health and environmental benefits.” From Waste Management to Clean Materials details a clear pathway that can create tens of thousands of clean materials jobs across the region by 2040. The starting point for the blueprint is the intensifying crisis facing solid waste management.
