TED interview with Achim Steiner
 
The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated income and non-income inequalities worldwide, impacting the most vulnerable countries hardest. In this TED interview, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner provides critical insights into how to foster alliances and partnerships to help the developing world cope with the adverse socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic. During the interview, Mr. Steiner emphasized the vital role of UNDP in facilitating collaboration between governments, the private sector, and the broader development community in areas such as health care, clean energy, and digital solutions. UNDP-UNEP High-Level Dialogue: The Future of Development in a Post-COVID-19 World
 
17 June 2020. In preparation for the 2020 Human Development Report, UNDP and UNEP co-hosted a high-level dialogue to explore ways to achieve more inclusive and greener societies in a post-COVID-19 world. The event featured UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner; UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen; Joseph Stiglitz, Professor at Columbia University and Nobel Laureate in Economics; Raya Haffar El Hassan, Former Minister of Finance and Interior of Lebanon; and Bina Agarwal, Professor at the University of Manchester. Femi Oke, a television presenter and journalist, moderated the session, and a vibrant Q&A followed. Watch the event.
Exploring UBI's Potential to Deliver Economic Security and Gender Equality
 
On 11 June, UNDP Gender and Inclusive Growth Teams co-hosted a webinar to discuss challenges, opportunities, and trade-offs of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a response to the socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemics, particularly on women and girls. The session counted with high-level presentations from Dean Karlan, Professor of Economics and President of Innovations for Poverty Action; Pablo Iglesias, Second Vice President of the Government of Spain; and Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General. Raquel Lagunas, Head of Gender Team, moderated the session, and BPPS Chief Economist George Molina Gray and Political Activist Aruna Roy provided insightful remarks. Watch the discussion

SparkBlue: GPN's new digital engagement platform 

The CoP on Poverty and Inequality is pleased to announce the launch of SparkBlue, the new knowledge platform for the Global Policy Network. SparkBlue is the new home for UNDP's Communities of Practice and the one-stop-shop to get updates, news, and reports on UNDP's COVID-19 2.0 Offer. The platform will serve as a place to generate, capture, store, and share curated knowledge, promoting innovation and cross-practice collaboration while complementing existing tools such as Yammer and Teams. To get started, log in using your UNDP email and password and browse relevant events, community snapshots, e-discussions, specific resources and publications, latest happenings, and more. Check out this video and learn more about SparkBlue.

Lives or livelihoods? Global estimates of the mortality and poverty costs of COVID-19

Check out this World Bank's blog post featuring a new paper on the global poverty and mortality effects of COVID-19. Using life-years as a unit, it finds that the pandemic has led to 68 million additional years in extreme poverty and the loss of 4.3 million years of life for a sample of 150 countries. Results indicate that the poverty costs are substantial relative to the mortality costs from COVID-19 and that this ratio declines sharply with GDP per capita. Read more.

 Tackling the fall of remittances in low-income and fragile countries

Remittances – money sent back home by migrant and guest workers living abroad— represent a vital source of income for many developing countries. With the COVID-19 threatening to reduce remittances in $100 billion for 2020, this IMF blog post proposes three urgent actions: 1) stabilize employment opportunities for migrant workers in host countries; 2) contain virus spread in countries receiving returning migrants; and 3) provide financial assistance to remittance-dependent countries. International Perspectives in Psychology invites researchers and practitioners from all disciplines to submit to a special COVID-19 journal issue. Submissions should address the interconnectedness of COVID-19's impact on work, home, and community lives. This issue will place a particular emphasis on examining how COVID-19 has changed poverty and inequality around the world and what innovative, just, and sustainable solutions could be pioneered for global recovery and development.
