Renew your DSANA membership for 2020-2021!

On July 1st, a new year of DSANA membership will begin.

If you're already a member, sign into your account today and easily renew your membership in just a few steps. You're probably familiar with all that DSANA has to offer but scroll down to learn more.

If you receive this newsletter but are not a member, why not join DSANA?  Membership will give you access to technical information about sheep dairying, unique access to the public, opportunities to improve your milk production, and more.

Here are 4 key benefits of a $75 DSANA membership:
  • Symposium proceedings: More than 20 years of technical information from DSANA's annual Symposia is now collected on the website. The Symposium Proceedings from 1995-2019 include detailed reports on presentations given by a variety of experts on everything from dairy sheep nutrition to parlor design to innovative marketing of sheep's milk products. Membership in DSANA is required to access the Proceedings.

  • The Flock Health Forum: For DSANA members, this is an amazing new resource -- a message board where you can post questions or share ideas based on a particular topic. Read people's posts on lamb diseases, parasite control, mastitis, and other topics. To receive email notifications of new posts, click on the blue box in the upper right corner, then click on Settings, then scroll down to the Preferences heading. Choose how you'd like to receive notifications and make sure Messages is turned on (click the white button so that black is showing next to it).

  • The DSANA membership directory: This new list of DSANA members across North America is accessible to anyone online; the public can easily search for dairy sheep producers near them. However, you can only be listed here if you're a DSANA member. If you're a member but have not set up your listing yet, now's the time! There is a step-by-step guide that you can access by clicking on the word "slideshow" in the paragraph at the top of the Directory.

  • Genetic Improvement: To help strengthen the dairy sheep industry, DSANA has launched a Production Improvement Program. Farms that are members of DSANA can enroll in the program and work with an advisor to collect production data that will then be analyzed to formulate flock data that can be used by producers to make flock management decisions that will improve production overall. DSANA members are also able to order imported semen through our semen importation efforts.

Also note that for $75 in membership, up to 5 members of your farm, family, organization, or business can be included under your membership umbrella and be able to access all of the above benefits.

The 2020 DSANA Symposium Moves Online

Can you remember the last time you stood in a group photo like this one?  This was taken at last year's DSANA symposium in Idaho. This year the symposium was going to be held in South Carolina but the coronavirus had other ideas. So the DSANA volunteer board will be organizing on online series of presentations and Q&A that will serve as this year's symposium.

If anyone in our dairy sheep community has experience running online meetings, webinars, discussion panels, or even conferences, we are seeking a bit of assistance in getting our event up and running. (Or, if you have a technically savvy nephew or best friend who could help us, that would be great, too!)  Please email DSANA if you can pitch in and offer your smarts.

Watch this space for updates about our Fall symposium and how it will be conducted online. It will take place at the same time it always does - early November - and some of the topics we are considering for discussion and presentations include mastitis, deworming of lactating ewes, and the nutritional benefits of sheep's milk.

Advertiser's corner  ~~  (to advertise here, please contact DSANA)
DSANA is trying to understand the general level of milk production within our industry, and how many of us are measuring our ewes' production, and whether our producers would like assistance in this area. This survey has 10 questions, mostly multiple choice, and should take less than 5 minutes. There are 3 non-multiple-choice questions, which may require you to look up first: the number of ewes milked and the total milk you produced in 2019, and the avg. number of days your ewes milked in 2019.

Please complete the survey here
