This Juneteenth, INTERRUPT RACISM
Today is Juneteenth, the 155th anniversary of news of emancipation reaching slaves in Galveston, Texas, almost two and a half years after President Lincoln gave his Emancipation Proclamation.
While we celebrate this jubilee moment and the civil liberties that came in the decades that followed, we are also very aware that the underpinnings of slavery---systemic racism---are still alive and well in our community and our country.
On June 4th, Rochester's leading civil rights organization the Urban League began a campaign in collaboration with Rochester Institute of Technology called INTERRUPT RACISM to address this issue.
A collective impact platform, INTERRUPT RACISM aims to gather and elevate the voices of people just like you in the Rochester community who have powerful insights, personal experiences, and recommendations for a path forward.
We really need your help: We want to hear from as many voices as we can to get the best diversity of responses, and submissions are only accepted through July 5.
That's only two more weeks for us to band together to plan how we will INTERRUPT RACISM.
On this Juneteenth, we ask that you join our fight to ensure that the vestiges of slavery and racial inequities do not remain a part of Rochester's ongoing story.
Will you join us as an INTERRUPTER?
Please consider donating and also responding to our INTERRUPT RACISM survey. It will take you about five minutes, and you could have a major impact on our community.
Thank you, and we wish you a safe, healthy weekend!
Sincerely,
The INTERRUPT RACISM Team
