Basecamp not only launched a new email service this week they deleted over three million accounts across all their apps. Holy heck that's a lot!

They felt that keeping data from old or unused accounts was bad. I think so to. Hence we clean up old and unused accounts and lists every six months or so.

Which brings me nicely to a revamp of our article about identifing people on the database who are starting down the slippery slope towards unsubscribing. It revolutionised email marketing when we introduced it and it's still a super useful customer retention model now.

This week I read the Democracy of Speed. It's eighteen years of photographs at a Virginia dragstrip showing a multiracial community united by their love of fast cars. Great photos and a model for how people can be together.

Finally, smoke from the Australian bushfires rose to extraordinary heights reaching higher into the ozone layer than ever before. Scientists say the smoke from fires like these offer clues about the fate of much larger quantities of smoke that would result from a nuclear war. Well that's a silver lining....hmmm.
