“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!”

Book Groups Update
The Book Groups team is busy putting together our new catalogue – read on for a sneak peek at some of the titles we’ve chosen. We are also working on a brand new Book Groups website that will make it easier for groups to manage selections and we hope to share this with you later in the year.

While our warehouse provider, Yooralla, remains closed and we are unable to send books at this time, we are in discussions for a possible reopen date. We hope to resume normal deliveries soon. We will advise once we have a set date for deliveries to resume and will discuss the best arrangement for making up for any missed books with each group.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. We would appreciate it if you can hold onto any books you may have until we advise that they can be returned.

If your group chooses to meet in person, please consider the following:
  • Ensure you check and comply with any restrictions for your state or territory
  • Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating and after handling books
  • If you are unwell, please do not attend meetings and seek medical advice
We will continue to provide updates to Book Groups secretaries, and plenty of book news through this newsletter. We thank you for your understanding and support. We hope you are all staying safe and well during this difficult time.

If you have any concerns, please contact us at bookgroups@cae.edu.au.

Dialogue Sneak Peek
The Book Groups Team has been busy reading a great selection of books for our upcoming 2021 catalogue, Dialogue, which will be released later this year.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of the fantastic titles we’ve chosen and what we loved about them.
Featured Book Group – Parkes 1
Parkes 1 Book Group met recently and had a great discussion of Lady Susan [B1046] by Jane Austen. Thank you to the group for sharing their thoughts: ‘A new discovery and a welcome one: an intelligent and charming but evil heroine so unlike Jane’s later literary ladies.’
Giveaways
Jane in Love – Rachel Givney
At age twenty-eight, Jane Austen should be seeking a suitable husband, but all she wants to do is write. She is forced to take extreme measures in her quest to find true love, which lands her in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Magically, she finds herself in modern-day England, where horseless steel carriages line the streets and people wear very little clothing. She forms a new best friend in fading film star Sofia Wentworth, and a genuine love interest in Sofia’s brother Fred.
Jane is delighted to discover that she is now a famous writer, a published author of six novels and beloved around the globe. But as Jane’s romance with Fred blossoms, her presence in the literary world starts to waver. She must find a way to stop herself disappearing from history before it’s too late. A modern-day reimagining of the life of one of the world’s most celebrated writers, this wonderfully witty romantic comedy offers a new side to Jane’s story.

Melting Moments – Anna Goldsworthy
Ever-practical Ruby is always striving for what is right and proper, from the time we meet her as a striking soldier’s fiancée through to the rather less steady years of her old age. With an eyebrow pencil in one hand and gardening shears in the other, Ruby navigates the intervening years doing her duty as a woman, allowing marriage and motherhood to fill her with purpose and pleasure - and only occasionally wondering, is this all there is?
In her moving, captivating fiction debut, award-winning author Anna Goldsworthy recreates the Adelaide and Melbourne of half a century ago, bringing a family to life as they move through the decades, challenging and caring for and loving one another, often in surprising ways. Charming and sharply observed, Melting Moments is, like Ruby herself, a gentle powerhouse.
