Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #453 - 16 June 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from the
Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from an other Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community? Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions. Thank you for your support.

16 June, from Kuring Gai Police Area Command: ANTI-THEFT NUMBER PLATE SCREWS.

With motor vehicle registration plates being targeted throughout the command, we are reminding you that there are anti-theft registration plate screws on the market that can deter would-be thieves from stealing your registration plate.

Offenders use stolen plates to avoid identification when committing serious offences such as major traffic offences, petrol theft, drug trafficking and break and enters.

You can help prevent serious offences and keep your number plates safe by following a few simple steps:

* Secure your number plates with one-way, anti-theft screws – they cost only a few dollars and can be fitted with a standard flat bladed screwdriver

* Park your car in a secure place – off the street in a garage or carport where possible

* Stay alert and report the theft of number plates to police as soon as possible.

Anti-theft screws:

Police, in conjunction with Neighbourhood Watch can in some instances supply anti-theft screws for free. Keep a lookout for these events via our Facebook page, but for now, Covid-19 is restricting such community events.

Hornsby Police have a limited number of these screws at the station, so please give us a call and come in and pick some up.

Anti-theft screws though, are also available from most major hardware stores and automotive outlets for only a few dollars. Some may even fit the screws to your vehicle for free.

From Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation

There are many great ways to be a part of the #ChildProtection industry, and study is a great entry point.

This week we had students from The University of Queensland visit the ACCCE for a meet and greet. Bec and Rebecca are UQ thesis students who are studying trends in child protection.

It was great to be able to show them the new building and spend some time discussing their ongoing research in this space.

14 June: A warning from one of our residents on Friday:

Hi there - I live in Turramurra and this afternoon at about 15:30 I spotted some suspicious activity in my street.

A man in his about his 40’s was walking onto each persons properties with a long stick and a mirror and taking pictures of their gates and intercoms. He was on each property for no more than 1 minute and didn’t knock at the front door or anything. I watched him go up and down the street doing this. It felt very suspicious to me. He didn’t see me and I did report it to the police.

He had short brown hair, no facial hair, navy trousers, a yellow high vis vest, a backpack and some kind of phone/device.

Not sure if anyone else has reported anything similar?

It was central Turramurra, between Bobbin Head Road and Bannockburn Street.

14 June, Shared with permission from the Berowra Community group:

More graffiti at BPS. It’s just so disappointing.

11 June, from Australian Federal Police

What do you do if you find disturbing images of children online?

If you come across this type of content, do NOT share it or comment on it. While it is tempting to jump in the comments and tag the AFP or other law enforcement groups, this is not the way to go.

The first thing to do is report it to platform you’ve seen the content on using the built-in reporting options. A lot of these are very easy to use. This is the quickest way to get the content removed and ensure the right information gets to the right police. Platforms work closely with the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation and international counterparts when it comes to protecting our children; they are required to report all suspected child exploitation material to law enforcement.

You can also report content directly to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation by heading to this site.

Offensive, illegal or harmful content online can be reported to the eSafety site.
Importantly, If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 000 or your local police.
