What we're talking about this week:
Rayshard Brooks
Grubhub 🚀
and moooore

get started.

✊🏿
name to know: Rayshard Brooks
summed up: We are dedicated to being an anti-racist resource for our readers.

👍
An explanation...
On Friday, Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by Atlanta police using "an unjustified use of deadly force." His death comes as a painful reminder of the importance of demonstrations across the country to protest racism and police violence.

So what does this mean?
The Atlanta police chief has resigned and the officer who killed Brooks has been fired and may face murder charges. It is our job to speak up, show up, and stand up for Black lives. There are many different ways of doing this... the most important thing is to actively learn, grow, and continuously work on being anti-racist.

Here's what you can do:
The following information is adapted from work by Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist.*

1. Understand the definition of racist as "one who is supporting a racist policy through their actions or inaction or expressing a racist idea"

2. Stop saying "I'm not racist" because it is defensive and stops you from embracing decidedly anti-racist views and beliefs

3. Identify racial inequities and disparities in politics, healthcare, criminal justice, education, income, and just about every sector of private and public life

4. Confront racist ideas you've held or continue to hold because people can hold racist ideas without realizing they are biased

*We are repeating this information from last week because reading it multiple times may uncover new ideas and realizations.

Anything else?
The Root gives us a platform to speak to over 1000 people every week. We cannot stand silent while Black communities are suffering. We have a responsibility to speak up and educate. Black lives matter.

If you signed up for the anti-racist book club, we are still looking into the most productive/helpful way to organize it. We will keep you updated! If you are interested in joining, please fill out this form.

🚀
Lmao sorry, Uber.
summed up: Just Eat Takeaway.com, a European food delivery company, is buying Grubhub... and beat Uber.

Explain...
Just Eat Takeaway.com, the European food delivery service, agreed to buy Grubhub for $7.3B (!!) According to the CEO of Just Eat Takeaway, the goal is to create the world's largest food delivery business outside of China. BUUUT, the real tea: Uber was in talks with Grubhub for a while.

🙍
What does this mean?
This all means two things:
1.
food delivery is IT
Food delivery has always been personally close to our hearts. In 2018 and 2019, there were 25 mergers and acquisitions-- valued at around $20B. However, throughout the pandemic, food delivery has become even more popular. This merger signals growing competition in the food-delivery market.

2. Uber is under scrutiny for its overwhelming BDE
Amy Klobuchar, a leading member of an antitrust committee, said it best: "During this pandemic, when millions are out of work and many small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, our country does not need another merger that could squelch competition." (@Uber)

In other news...

1. Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder and husband to the Serena Williams,
resigned from the board in an effort to make it more diverse.

2. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is going to continue pumping stimulus into the US economy. It drove the market down.

3. Thousands of people gathered in Brooklyn for Black Transgender Lives.
