Update for volunteer coordinators

Dear <<First Name>>:

I hope you are safe and well.

Please find three important updates below with casework successes and the rest of our news further down.

  • Fireside chat with Lucy and Brian: As you know, we had planned to host a Community Thank You evening for volunteers and supporters. As this was cancelled due to the lockdown, we will be hosting a virtual Q&A with CEO Lucy and chair of trustees Rev Brian Leathard this Thursday 18 June at 6pm instead. You and all volunteers should have already received the webinar invitation last week. Register on Zoom now

  • The Queen’s Award Voluntary Service awards: This is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. We believe that all of our shelter volunteer groups have a good chance of winning. Those who nominate cannot be volunteers, employees, trustees or anyone involved with the running of the group but they can be supporters or beneficiaries. If you know someone who would be able to make an application and they need support, please contact communications officer Rachael (rachael@glassdoor.org.uk). Nominations are accepted from 1st April until mid-September. Find out more

  • Make and donate masks: Do you know of any crafty volunteers who can help make and donate cloth face masks for guests? Find out more here and spread the word.

Best,

Megan for the Glass Door Team

Casework updates:

Casework numbers: The casework team have had a record year in achieving outcomes for guests. Find top-line figures on our impact page

From caseworker Joe: I have helped several guests to access accommodation in the last two weeks including a young female guest who will be staying in hotel accommodation until a one-bed flat becomes available for her and a male guest who is now in a studio flat. I also sign-posted a young male refugee to New Horizon Youth Centre and he confirmed last week that he had been housed by the YMCA. Finally, I helped a young female guest to pay off outstanding rent arrears today through a grant application to Fund for Human Need.

From caseworker Gemma: I have assisted a guest who was previously staying in our night shelters to move into new accommodation after a previous opportunity fell through. She moved in last week.

Other news:

White privilege perpetuates black homelessness: Communications officer Rachael looks at the racism inherent in housing and homelessness in London. Read the story

Glass Door in the news: Glass Door caseworker Alex Norris spoke to The New York Times about his experience supporting people affected by homelessness during the coronavirus pandemic, and CEO Lucy and a guest who we supported into a hotel feature in Yahoo! News. Read the coverage.

Fundraising superstars: School children Jack and Ethan organised a cake sale to coincide with the "Clap for the NHS". They raised over £300 to be shared between Glass Door and the NHS. Fundraising manager Ian said: “We’ve been really touched by the support of the Glass Door community during this challenging time, and this is another wonderful example of local people coming together to help tackle homelessness.”
