Dear Colleagues,

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Those are the immortal words of Martin Luther King Jr., and originated by abolitionist Theodore Parker.

And while poignant, these words are incomplete.  Its accompaniment, simple.

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Just as justice must bend toward it.”

Change cannot, and must not, be placed on the shoulders of one group of actors.  Sustained change only happens when all actors trend toward the same destination.  This is true for our work, which has historically disproportionately placed adult, low-income and students of color in developmental education.

Reform is not the responsibility of only the math professor.  It takes advisors to check their own biases and see students for the value they bring, administrators to monitor the impact of practices, and leaders to rewrite policies that serve as structural barriers.  This is happening every day in an increasing number of locations, but it is not universal.

Strong Start to Finish is a collective network of people who are working to bend the arc, dramatically, to eliminate structural barriers so that a far greater number of students pass challenging math & English courses.  We are not perfect, but every day we are hard at work to be better. And I couldn’t be happier to be among the partners, systems and colleagues who are a part of this work.  And, if you aren’t, let’s talk.

Wishing you and those close to you well in these turbulent times.

Sincerely,

Christopher M. Mullin, Ph.D.
