Tune into foreign films
If you’re not usually very adventurous, why not branch out and watch some foreign films. To help you out, we have delved into Netflixs plentiful offering to find 10 of the best foreign language films and TV shows which will have you hooked from start to finish.

  1. Train to Busan - Set in South Korea, a father and daughter find themselves on a train to Busan to visit the child's mother. But a zombie outbreak occurs en route. Absolute carnage ensues and this is one of the best South Korean thrillers out there, with a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Language: Korean
  2. Unorthodox - This German American drama series, which is primarily in Yiddish, follows a girl who tells the story of young ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman, Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas), who after a disastrous year of marriage, attempts to escape her arranged husband. Language Yiddish and German
  3. On Body and Soul - This film follows two co-workers discover they have the same dreams at night and decide they are going to make these dreams a reality. Language: Hungarian
  4. Fauda - This show follows Doron, a retired Israel Defence Force officer who is taking some time out to work on his vineyard. But soon enough he is pulled back in for active duty after he learns that an enemy, he thought was no longer at large is in fact alive and kicking and has his sights set on attending a family wedding. Naturally, Doron can’t resist going undercover and a series of chaotic events occur. It's gripping TV at its finest. Language: Yiddish
  5. Dark - This is a truly dark German TV series. Two children vanish from a German town and as the community attempts to unravel the mystery, the fractured relationships and all the dirty laundry come out of the wash. There are a lot of twists and turns so make sure you are concentrating on those subtitles. Well worth the watch. Language: German
  6. The Invisible Guest - Well this is dark. A young chap wakes up in a hotel room next to the body of his dead lover and the room is locked. To try and prove his innocence he employs a famous lawyer to help him out and the pair, over the course of one night, attempt to uncover the truth. Language: Spanish
  7. Quicksand - After tragedy strikes as a school in Stockholm, a high school student finds herself on trial for murder. Language:  Swedish
  8. Divines - Set on a housing estate on the outskirts of Paris, a teenager who is look for relevance in the community becomes a runner for a drug dealer. But when she comes into contact with a male dancer a whole new world of performance opens up to her. Language: French
  9. Nobel - An army lieutenant returns home from a tour of Afghanistan and finds himself becoming, unknowingly, a pawn in an international political game. How far will he go to achieve peace? Language: Norwegian
  10. On My Skin - Based on a true story, this film follows Stefano Cucchi who after being arrested for a minor crime, is found dead after a week in custody. Language: Italian

WOW (Women of the World) x BBC: WOWxBBC Highlights, BBC iPlayer

You can now watch highlights of the weekend-long virtual WOW Festival, presented as part of the BBC’s Culture in Quarantine. Includes contributions from inspirational women from around the world on subjects such as leadership, hope and the current pandemic.

Culture in Quarantine Exhibition Tours
Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema – The Exhibition BBC iPlayer

An exclusive preview of the National Galleries of Scotland exhibition, marking 100 years since Ray Harryhausen’s birth.  The film special effects superstar is credited with elevating stop motion animation into an artform. His innovative and inspiring filming, from the 1950s onwards, changed the face of modern movie-making forever. It includes personal objects on show for the first time, alongside painstakingly restored original models not on display for many years. The preview includes interviews with Ray’s daughter Vanessa Harryhausen, actors Caroline Munro and Martine Beswick; and also shows how Harryhausen’s new techniques influenced a whole generation of film makers.

Try writing a song
If you have a musical persuasion, you could channel your current emotions into a song or even an entire album of them. If you’re not sure where to start a songwriting course could get you into the right frame of mind, and you can even start making some Spotify playlists in the meantime to get inspired.

Slough Libraries are working with members of Slough’s writing community to plan and produce a collaborative novel that will reflect the multitude of societal issues in the current time.
