ART WORKSHOPS FOR TERM 3

SOUND FEATHERS and A CLASS MANU

Age Range:  YNE +
Time: 3 hours (including 20 min break )
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student


Inspired by the notable presence of birds during lockdown around Aotearoa this workshop is designed to encourage children to continue to spend time listening now that we are nearly back to normal life. Through the process of turning sound into visual language, students will begin to understand some of the abstract ways that visual language can operate. With both individual and collaborative aspects to this workshop, each class will end up with a collaborative wall piece - a Class Manu to take back to school.
 
 
SAY IT LOUD

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours  (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student

In this workshop students will create their own placard with a message of positivity. They will learn basic visual communication principles using colour, composition and size. This workshop will give each student the opportunity to voice their own message while also respecting and hearing the messages of their peers.
DRAWING IT OUT
Age Range: Y3-9
Time: 2.5 hours (including 20 min break ) 
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student


A drawing workshop about learning to see. 
Students will develop hand-eye coordination using line, light and shadow. They will create a series of drawings using exercises designed to develop confidence and express the essence of an object. This will involve applying simple techniques of light and shade with different drawing media. 

 
ART OF POETRY
Age Range: Y3+
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student


A wordy workshop about expressing ideas through poetry
 And turning those words into visual artworks
In this workshop students will work in small groups to create a collaborative poem. They will use pastel or oil stick on coloured paper and a small canvas to create one giant visual poem in a “John Reynolds” style. This collaborative work will then come to life when the students read the painting aloud.
 
This workshop can be based on any inquiry topic.
 
MANU TUKUTUKU

Age Range: Y1+
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student


Students will create a contemporary version of a traditional Manu tukutuku.

They will learn about binding and decorative techniques used for Taonga Tuku Iho, Taaniko, Raranga and Whakairo.
The Matariki cluster will be a starting point to learn about the Manu Tukutuku and Manu Aute flown to connect with Nga Atua during the time of Matariki.
Students will then create their own symbols and decorate their Manu Tukutuku to connect with Hiwa-I-Te-Rangi, the star associated with realising our aspirations for the coming year.


 
THE CARDBOARD PLAYGROUND
Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $7.50 plus GST per student


Who has ever wanted to design their own playground?
In this construction workshop, students will work collaboratively to do just that. They will explore designing, building and connecting techniques with low to zero waste through creating Cardboard Playground models.
 
 

PACIFICA EXPERIENCE WORKSHOPS

PACIFICA EXPERIENCE

Age Range: Y NE -Y13
Time: 2 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student

In this workshop students learn how Pacifica music, songs and movements convey stories and pass on lessons of cultural identity and Pacifica protocols. The workshop will be held at the Pacifica Arts Centre at Corban Estate and is run by the Mamas. Students will be introduced to musical instruments of the Pacific and learn drum patterns and dance movements. The Mamas will also teach students how to transform environmental or recycled resources into a colourful lei.

PACIFICA EXPERIENCE  2.0 

Age Range: Y NE - 13
Time: 2 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23  - Max. 60 students
Fee: $8.50 plus GST per student
 
If you have enjoyed Pacifica Experience  - come to our Pacifica Experience 2.0! 

Learn about Pacific migration, communication, oral traditions, geography, and social constructs, and how traditions have changed and adapted over time. The focus is around Pacific sound and movement.  Elements include drum, chant and story-telling, dance and ukulele.  For larger groups, ask about an option delivered to you at your school

 

FEATURE ARTIST WORKSHOPS 

PŪTAHI - The Intersection of Movement and Art Making

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 30 students - Max. 60 Students
Fee: $10.50 plus GST per student
                      
A workshop collaboration with Atamira Dance Company’s Artistic Director Jack Gray and the Corban Estate Art Education team
 
A new and refreshing experience for tamariki to creatively explore a tactile and interactive environment using their imagination and their bodies. Students will use story and self-reflection to develop skills in a range of creative forms. Students will develop movement, word, sound and visual works during this workshop.
 
PŪTAHI is creatively inspired by Nga Atua Māori and natural elements of land, water and sky. The overall experience will be a combining of the many ideas that evolve during the process and will be reflected upon at the end of the session.
MANU ME - Toi Taukiri ( Identity Art )

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 2 hours 
Capacity: Min. 23 students - Max. 60 Students

WITH ARTIST PENNY HOWARD

Artist Penny Howard brings some of her large silhouette paintings to this workshop and will talk to the students about how she is inspired by her cultural identity and family stories. The students will create their own vibrant bird silhouette using black paper and pastel. It will be filled will cultural patterns, objects, shapes, colours, and places that tell the story of who they are.
Penny Howard is a contemporary NZ artist of Māori (Te Mahurehure) Irish and Scottish descent, she has a BVA and is represented by Whitespace Contemporary Art Gallery. A finalist in the Wallace Art Awards and National Portrait Award, Penny has work in numerous public and private collections including the Wallace Arts Trust, Auckland University and Foundation North.  
 
Penny's work focuses on identity and explores memory and stories of whanau and whakapapa.
 
A red thread runs through Penny's work which embodies I ngā wa o mua, the Māori world view to take the past with us into the future for guidance.  
ASSEMBLAGE ART

Age Range: Y3 - Y8
Time: 2 hours
Capacity: Min. 40 - Max. 60 students
Fee: $11.50 plus GST per student
 
WITH FOUND MATERIALS ARTIST ANDREW HALL
Andrew is an artist who is passionate about sustainability and recycling. He will share the reasons he uses found materials, and how he draws new life from discarded objects. A master of ingenuity and improvisation, Andrew, and our educator will work with students to develop their imagination and inventive skills and assemble 3-D sculptures from recycled, man-made ‘found’ materials.

 
TOTES YOUR OWN

Age Range: Y3 - Y13
Time: 3 hours (including a 20 min break)
Capacity: Min. 30 - Max. 50 students
Fee: $14.50 plus GST per student (tote bag included)
 
WITH FABRIC & TEXTILE ARTIST KATIE SMITH

In this workshop with textile artist Katie Smith, students will explore the use of pattern, form and repetition in textile printmaking. Students will design and construct a print block, and use textile inks to create their very own tote.



 
CERAMIC STUDIO 

Age Range: YNE+
Time: 2 hours
Capacity: Min. 23 students - Max. 60 Students
Fee: $14.50 plus GST per student
                           
WITH CERAMIC ARTIST KAIRAVA GULLATZ

In this hands-on clay class, students will design and shape their very own vessel,  tile, or waka huia. They will be glazed and fired, making their vessels fully functional for everyday use. Students will learn hand-building techniques and will decorate their ceramic project vessel using two different clay colours.

At Corban Estate Arts Centre we are serious about the arts and the role it plays in education. We believe in passing on knowledge and skills to anyone who is interested and that means adults as well as children and young people.We develop workshops to suit your needs - covering a wide range of professional skills from Maori visual arts to oil painting, printmaking, arts therapy, ceramics and mixed media.

This ensures our professional development programme is diverse and multi-dimensional, will offer teachers the opportunity to explore and experiment with techniques, materials and a broad range of outcomes.

We offer individual masterclasses, a series of sessions over the term, or once a month all year long.

SENIOR PROGRAMME

We provide customised programmes for intermediate and high schools. From a one hour gallery tour to a full day programme and we can organise workshops with artists to match your curriculum needs. Extend technical knowledge with specialist artist workshops, or  tour studios and talk with on-site practising artists. Recent specialist workshops have included life-drawing classes, graffiti workshops, textile design and print, oil painting techniques. sculpture tours, and curator talks.

MEET THE TEAM:

Megan Carter: Arts Education Coordinator. She has been involved across the Arts sector as a producer, coordinator and writer, and is currently completing her Masters in Creative Writing through Massey University. 

Eilis Galuszewski: Arts Educator and creative technician. She has a background in all forms of art making and specialises in wearable arts, theatre and costume design.

Ashlee Tawhiti: Arts Educator and delivers our new Artreach - Outreach programme to lower decile school groups.  She is a practising visual artist and tutor, with experience in supporting special learning environments. 

Jean Stewart: Arts Educator. She has maintained a painting practice for more than 15 years and recently exhibited at Corban in the Shifting Landscapes exhibition. 

Penny Howard: Arts Educator. She is a practicing artist with works in several private and public collections. Her primary focus lies in identity.
