Uniform
This week I received a document form Catholic Schools NSW titled “Return to full-time face-to-face learning guidelines”. Whilst all schools in our diocese have been engaging in full-time on-campus learning for s few weeks now, the updated health advice and the changes to national and state restrictions mean that schools can recommence additional school-based activities. This is of course great news for all of us, as it is the next step in a return to the many and varied experiences that education should present to students.
But as things do return to normal, we need to also ensure that we all meet our own responsibilities. Simple things like ensuring that we are in attendance, with the correct equipment and on-time is the responsibility of everyone within our community. One very visual responsibility of all students is the College uniform.
With the colder weather now setting in it is timely to remind students and their families about their responsibility regarding uniform. As outlined on Page 13 of the College Diary, “The College uniform is designed to reflect industry standards as endorsed by the College Board. It must be worn in such a manner that promotes the College’s long standing reputation in the community”. As per the Diary, the only warmer article of clothing that is to be worn by students is the College jacket which is to be purchased at the St Agnes Uniform Store. The one exception to this is the Senior Jersey which all Year 12 students were given the option of ordering through the College to recognise their final year of schooling.
In the coming weeks students will continue to be reminded about their responsibilities with regards to all aspects of uniform and grooming. A few key elements worth highlighting include, polishable black shoes, the fact that facial jewellery is not to be worn at the College or at College related activities and the requirement for boys to be clean shaven. Whilst no one area of the uniform is more important than any other there has been some concern about these points in particular since school has resumed.
If you have any questions or difficulties with purchasing or orgainising the correct uniform or your son/daughter being unable to meet these expectations, please speak to their Pastoral Care teacher, Year Coordinator or you are welcome to contact me directly.
All students are expected to be in their full College uniform. If there is a short term reason why your son/daughter is unable to wear the correct uniform on a particular day you can assist by ensuring that they have a note to explain the short term nature of the issue. For those students that would like to be warmer in the winter months the Uniform Store also supplies Newman College long pants.

Assistant Principal's Message - Learning & Teaching
Today saw another step towards "normal" school life as we were able to gather as a community and hold an assembly in our hall.
The main purpose of the assembly was to present Year 12 students with their Semester One Awards. Current restrictions meant that the assembly needed to be limited, so after a brief introduction and an explanation of the awards students moved back into classrooms where their PC teachers presented the awards.
I would like to congratulate the Year 12 students that received awards today and I hope that the short assembly was informative and potentially aspiring for the year 11 students. Year 11 students will have their Semester One Awards assembly early next term.

Assistant Principal's Message - Mission
Student Flu Vaccination
The College has received an offer from Plunketts Pharmacy in Port Macquarie to provide flu vaccinations in a clinic on site at our College for students and staff.
As the Government strongly encourages as many Australians as possible to get a Flu Vaccination this year, particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought this may be a convenient service for our students. (Students doing workplacement in an Aged Care facility are now required by law, to have the flu vaccination also).
In order to arrange this clinic we are requesting an expression of interest from families.
The cost is $23, which will be directly deposited into Plunketts Pharmacy account.
The proposed date is Monday 22 June (Week 9) during lunch.

Student Services News
Hi Newman family
At long last it was great to experience an assembly, albeit for a short time. Mr Nunan spoke to the College as a group and it was great to have some normality start to creep back into the school term.
This week at Newman College Year 12 have received their individual Semester Awards for their achievements within their subjects. Congratulations to all recipients of awards and use that recognition as a positive affirmation and boost as you head into the final stages of your schooling experience. Pictured above is Mr Dibbs' PC 12.7.
Whilst Year 12 were receiving their subject awards, Year 11 PC groups were launching their out of uniform and activities day. This fun event will be Wednesday Week 10 with more details to come in PC. Students will participate in activities at the College in the afternoon, following on from a BBQ lunch. Year 11 are asked to support local Vinnies charities by making a clothes donation day. Any clothes in good order will be accepted, so please support a worthy cause.

Tourism, Travel & Events News
A great number of Year 11 students have chosen Tourism, Travel and Events for their pattern of study this year, with most showing a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge in class discussions. As Term 2 draws to a close we are deep into learning the fundamentals of organising and booking travel products and services. This is a great unit as it exposes the students to some of the practical aspects of the industry, as well as providing practical skills and knowledge required for the tourism industry.
The Year 12 Tourism, Travel and Events students completed their unit on Australia earlier this term during the blended learning phase. We have started our final unit, Providing Information on International Destinations. The irony is not lost on me that international travel is on hold for the present time. We are facing new challenges each lesson, with many attractions, products and services around the world offering little information on their websites. However the students are learning where locations are and what they will be able to experience in the future. Many of the Year 12 students will finish the year with a Certificate III in Tourism, which is a great result.
Both year groups participated in a unit on Social and Cultural Diversity earlier this term. This unit provided each student an opportunity to gain an understanding of the challenges faced when assisting a person with a disability. The students all agreed that they required clear and concise communication skills.
A big thanks to Lauren Howard who has kindly donated a large number of tourism destination brochures for our classroom. They have made a wonderful addition brightening up the room and will make great reading for our students; thank you Lauren.

Workplacement News
Ruby Taylor (pictured) is another of our Newman students who continued attending workplacement throughout the COVID-19 lockdown. Ruby is a Human Services School-based Trainee at Emmaus Nursing Home.
The rapid spread of COVID-19 placed an enormous strain on health and aged care systems around the world. It was essential that students felt confident and had sufficient training to deal with the extra workload and stresses caused by the pandemic.
We sincerely thank Ruby for her continuing commitment to her elderly clients in these exceptional circumstances. Newman is proud of her efforts and we are confident this experience will lay a strong foundation for her future success in the health care sector.

CSNSW School Sport Cancellations
With the news that Term 3 Sport from CSNSW-Sport and the Department of Education and Training, School Sport Unit has been cancelled and the present restrictions governing sport and in consultation with Assistant Director, Michele McDonald it has been decided that to cancel Diocesan Secondary Diocesan Athletics, and Junior basketball, both pathway sports.
Also cancelled is Diocesan secondary touch football and netball in term 3.
In cancelling these events the health and wellbeing of students and teachers involved is most important. I thank everyone for their commitment to sport in the Lismore Diocese.

Our College counsellor can now resume face to face appointments as needed. For students who have previously seen the counsellor please email or go to the counsellors office to make an appointment.
For students who feel they would like some support please follow the procedure for referral.

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through what is on your mind or what is going on in your life. Through talking and getting things out, you are often able to find some clarity for your concerns. In this current situation it may be helpful to talk about what is happening for you.
Everything in the counselling session is kept private and confidential, however if we believe you are going to cause harm to yourself, or someone else or could be involved in a highly illegal activity, our counsellor or teachers are mandated to report.
