Together We Stand - 8 July

Join the artists and Blaklash Creative as part of a facilitated artist talk to share their reflections on the project as part of NAIDOC Week.

Together We Stand' is a collaborative cross regional art project developed by 10 First Nations creatives to keep connected and creating during COVID.

Printmaker Cholena Drew Hughes will create a large cyanotype 'background' which is divided into pieces and posted to 9 other artists across the SEQN region. Each artist then responds by adding their own artwork / creative contributions to the piece. The individual pieces are then returned to Cholena to become part of one large collaborative work and Uncle Kev Starkey is writing a music piece in response to conversations with each of the artists and the works they are creating.

This project is an initiative of SEQN First Nations Artist Collective supported by Creative Arts Alliance as part of our RASN delivery and with funding from Access Arts and Moreton Bay Regional Council.

  • The Zine Workshop will teach participants how to make their own zine using DIY materials found around the home and a variety of analogue creative tools. Super Hero Badge Making Workshop
For 9-12 year olds
  • Exploring your inner hero - We are looking for Moreton Bay children who have a hero inside of them just waiting to come out!
  • As part of an online workshop you will be guided to talk about heroes - those from your favourite movies and stories but also everyday heros too. Why do we admire them? What makes a hero super? What do you have in common with your hero? What awesome qualities and strengths do you have inside yourself that you can call on when times are tough for you or others. It's a great chance to connect to other young heroes too.
  • The fun part - making your super hero badge - Through the online workshop you will be guided to design your own hero logo which reflects your unique powers. Then using the materials provided in your workshop kit, as well as your colouring pens, you will make your own Hero Badge.
  • Do you have someone you miss or haven't been able to see lately? Why don't you "send them a little happiness" by creating a beautiful hand made card?
  • As part of this activity our little participants will be posted a card making kit containing fun die-cut shapes, coloured backgrounds and hand stamped messages to inspire them to collage, draw, paint and create your own colourful greeting card. (All you need is your own pencils and pens.)
  • Join our Workshop Artist and other young participants online to make your cards together. When you're finished take a photo of your creation for our online gallery and then post your completed card to your loved one.

Much Needed Boost

Over the past few months, BEMAC have funded and supported over $25,000 worth of artistic projects throughout Logan and Ipswich, as part of their RASN delivery.

Thanks to the help of local creative facilitators Ali Strachan and Alyssa Bebbington in Logan, and EJ Garrett and Nina Weaver in Ipswich, so many artists were able to keep creative during isolation.
Some Boosted Artists Include
Kate Douglas - Ipswich
Kate Douglas has always been interested in the evolving natural landscape around her and the human connection to it, and is currently creating a painting from a piece of Ipswich history; the heritage ‘Ipswich Hospital for the Insane’.
“This building has always interested and disturbed me with its imposing architecture and ominous feel. It sits abandoned and boarded up, adding to the eeriness.” Says Kate.
Therese Flynn-Clarke - Logan
Artist and Primary Arts Specialist Educator Therese Flynn-Clarke adapted her usual primary school classroom to a new virtual arts platform with online content for her students while they were home-schooling.

This new way of teaching art opened up new possibilities of online learning for her, leading to an idea of creating an online art workshop! Check out her new free lesson 'How to make wearable art'  (filmed and edited by Kerry Warnholtz).
Muddy Bong Tree - Ipswich
Muddy Bong Tree got busy writing, composing, performing and recording some original new tunes using the equipment they have at home. Here’s a track they while in iso, with a video clip too full of whimsy and imagination.

Members of the group - Andrew Ring and Kenneth Weaver - drew inspiration for the band name 'Muddy Bong Tree', from a line of one of their favourite Lear poems, 'The Owl and the Pussy-Cat'.
Chloe Wigg - Logan
Logan artist Chloe Wigg from Colours by Chloe completed a beautiful mural, painted on the front of her home. Chloe wanted a way to bring art to those in her local area during this time of isolation, but also to a new online community for all to enjoy.

Watch her time lapse video here!
Eva Fritz - Ipswich
Visual artist Eva Fritz has worked on large scale murals all around the world, but this time she’s created a beautiful outdoor mosaic mural in her hometown of Ipswich during this time of isolation.
Nat Hamon – Logan
Check out the Tonic Pop Podcast by Logan artist, Nate Hamon!

We love the fact that Nate is using his podcast platform to interview other artists and promote local art. Listen to the Tonic Pop podcast on Spotify.
.
Linda Shapcott – Ipswich
‘Doodle Foot’ is the latest project from Ipswich artist, Linda Shapcott, and it’s all about creating affordable art for the feet!

Linda’s using colour fast ink in order to bring life to loads of different shoes, giving people something truly unique and delightful to wear.

Journey from Home

17 year old Cooktown School student Ella Hartwig painted her journey through seven weeks of COVID-19 isolation.

In seven works, the viewer is taken on a journey of mood and emotion, each work reflecting a week of Ella’s isolation journey, each eye reflecting a mobile phone, a comment on an obsession with social media, as a way of keeping in touch with friends and the world, but also frustration at misinformation and never quite knowing what to believe.

Impactful Investment

After months of uncertainty, plans for the Empire Theatres Youth Ensemble program IMPACT Senior, can now go ahead thanks to a grant awarded to the Empire Theatres Projects Company.

The $14,000 grant, received from the Australia Council for the Arts Resilience Fund, will offset the costs of running the 2020 Senior IMPACT Ensemble program and includes the appointment of a guest artist to the creative team to operate as a mentor to the Ensemble and assist in the creation of their performance piece.

The 2020 Resilience Fund grants were designed to provide emergency relief to support the livelihoods, practice and operations of Australian artists, groups and organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Senior Ensemble production has gone in a different direction to their traditional model of a live production in response to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, by working towards the creation of a digital delivery of the performance.

Using gothic horror classic Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as inspiration, the production will be named Who's the Monster?

Empire Theatres Projects Manager, Jeanette Wedmaier said the funding was welcome news after the hardship already experienced this year.

"The IMPACT program is in it's 10th year and we had some very exciting plans at the start of the year, but unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic government restrictions, our Junior Ensemble, which was originally slated to perform their finished production from June 6-7, had to be cancelled," she said.

"This year's Senior IMPACT would not have been possible without the support of this grant given the closure of the theatre and the financial impact of the pandemic on the arts sector."

With the easing of restrictions, once selected, the Ensemble will be meeting in person and working towards the completion of a filmed final production.

Audition applications for the 2020 Senior IMPACT Ensemble Who's the Monster? are now open. Auditions will be held from June 19-22 with rehearsals to start in July and the finished product completed in October.

Design Your Evening

A renowned landscape architect who has been part of the revitalisation of Scenic Rim communities through the transformation of public spaces will join the panel at this month's Arts Dinner online!

The third event in the Arts Dinner Home Delivered series will explore the theme of Placemaking and Fabrication, with landscape architect John Mongard, whose designs feature in landmark projects including the Tamborine Mountain Village Greens precinct.

A feature of the cultural calendar for the past 13 years, Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Arts Dinners are currently being enjoyed as online get-togethers, while social distancing measures continue in response to COVID-19, thanks to a partnership with The South West Queensland Regional Arts Service Network and Arts Front.

Arts Dinners are as much about providing food for thought for the creative community as an opportunity to gather over dinner and the entrée to the 30 June event will be a live cooking demonstration by a local chef, using local produce, followed by entertainment by Josh Arnold and Phoebe Page. Creatives Daniel Flood, Jen Mallinson, David Shaw and Ben Tupas will join the panel discussion with John Mongard, who has received national urban design awards for his projects and whose Brisbane practice is focused on collaborative placemaking.

Anyone with a love of the arts or good food is welcome to register.
SECTOR NEWS
Support, Create, Recover

A new $22.5 million Arts and Cultural Recovery Package will focus on stabilising local arts companies and securing jobs for artists and arts workers, as an important part of the Palaszczuk Government’s COVID-19 recovery plan.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the funding – included in the second stage of the Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs plan - will be a significant investment in the future of Queensland’s arts sector and the renewed cultural and economic development of the state, including support for COVID safe cultural experiences for Queensland audiences.

“This latest recovery package includes a raft of initiatives to strengthen the sector’s foundations for the future, to drive new creative work, employ artists and arts workers, retain our skilled and talented creatives." Ms Palaszczuk said.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government had already been the first in Australia to respond, with measures to help sustain the sector through the immediate impacts of COVID-19.

“This newest recovery package will enable the sector to continue to stabilise, innovate and adapt, and to explore alternative venues, online delivery, and a digital marketplace,” Minister Enoch said.

“It will provide enhanced support for arts companies and festivals to maintain connections with audiences, keep artists and arts workers employed, and provide audiences the opportunity to reconnect with shared arts experiences. Funding will also support the ethical distribution of First Nations arts product through a digital marketplace, expanded sale channels and investing in the growth of the Indigenous Arts Centre (IAC) network.”

The gallery’s Making Art Work initiative is a new commissioning program designed to support Queensland artists during the pandemic-induced economic upheaval. More than 40 artists will present new works online through the Making Art Work website, a print publication and, as restrictions ease, in the IMA gallery space itself.

WOW Online

As WOW marks its 10th anniversary of celebrating women and girl's achievements, and examining and highlighting the problems they face, the world is facing a new threat to women's rights. The effects of the pandemic pose a profound risk of reversing progress made towards achieving gender equality; a risk the world must not ignore.

Now more than ever we need to find community; to connect women, civil society and governments and make women’s stories central to future planning across the globe. This is an opportunity to join hands, listen and ask  ‘what do we need to change, and how’?

The focus of the festival will move as the world turns. Anyone can tune into one of two channels - The Global Channel and The Local Channel - streaming live and simultaneously over the 24 hours. The programme is designed so that when you’re watching during daylight hours, the multitude of events will be generated from your area.
