1) Tomorrow: Indigenous LIVES Matter - PEI Healing Walk For Justice

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 18th, 2020

(Charlottetown, PEI) - On Friday, June 19th, 2020 members of the Indigenous Community on Prince Edward Island are hosting the Indigenous Lives Matter - PEI Healing Walk for Justice in recognition of Chantel Moore, Rodney Levi and countless other Indigenous lives lost to unnecessary police violence. The Healing Walk will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the George Coles Building (Grafton Street side) and travel on Church Street, Grafton Street, Pownal Street, Queen Street, Water Street, Pownal Street, and ending at Connaught Square.

“When we started to plan this Healing Walk for Justice we knew we wanted to focus on the fact that Indigenous people continue to experience police brutality here in Canada. We wanted to raise awareness and stand up and use our voices for the families of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi.” said one of the event’s organizers, Sarah Bernard, a Mi’kmaq woman from Scotchfort, Abegweit First Nation. “As an Indigenous woman who has experienced systemic racism and injustices, I know what it’s like. We acknowledge the Black Indigenous People of Colour, and we stand alongside them in the call’s for equality.”

Event organizers plan to have masks available for those who don't have their own and will be monitoring the assembly for social distancing measures. The group is currently working with local businesses and volunteers to collect donations of masks, water, hand sanitizers, etc. Any additional funds raised will be donated to Rodney Levi’s family.

Drivers should expect delays, watch for pedestrians, and proceed with caution if travelling in these areas on Friday afternoon.

For more information on attending or volunteering, please visit:  https://www.facebook.com/events/725985361470762

FACEBOOK EVENT INFORMATION

Friday, June 19, 2020
4:30pm
175 Richmond Street
Charlottetown

We have to stand up and use our voices for those who can no longer speak.

We stand with the families of Rodney Levi and Chantel Moore. We stand with all the Indigenous and People of Colour who have experienced race-based police brutality.

Police brutality is not just a problem in the United States, it is happening here in Canada.

In less than two weeks, two Indigenous people have lost their lives to the hands of an officer. This cannot continue.

Indigenous people make up 5% of the Canadian population but represent 30% of the Canadian prison population.

An Indigenous woman is 3.5 more times likely to experience violence as apposed to a non-Indigenous woman.

The lists of injustices to the Indigenous people is sadly so long.

We stand with the families who have lost their loved ones to police brutality.

This walk is not meant to take away from the Black Lives Matter movement in any way. We stand along side the Black community in this fight. You are not alone in this fight for equality.

We fight this fight together.

Stay tuned for updates on the Healing Walk for Justice.

During the walk we ask attendees to practice the social distancing guidelines set out by the province.

There will be masks made available but we ask please arrive with a mask.

EMT donations can be sent to
peihealingwalk2020@gmail.com

A special thank you to Rina Kowalski for the logo. The inspiration for Rina's "Indigenous Lives Matter" logo design came from traditional war paint to help bring strength to each other through reaching out in solidarity. The logo also has a double meaning of "hands up, don't shoot". BIPOC lives are still being gunned down and this is a reminder of the issues we are fighting against. The overall intent of the logo was to give strength to BIPOC communities and raise awareness.

According to the World Health Organization, the world is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic on two fronts — the disease itself and a related “info emic” that it says is just as dangerous as the virus. An infodemic is an overwhelming flood of information, misinformation, rumours, and outright scams that make it hard to know what to trust. Misinformation such as false preventive measures hurt public health efforts to control the illness and put peoples’ lives in danger. In this webinar, you’ll learn about the work under way to curtail the spread of misinformation. You’ll also get practical tips and tools to help find reliable sources of health information and evaluate its quality.

Date: Tuesday, June 23, 2020

7) PEI Job Opportunities - list shared by The Employment Journey on PEI

PEI job opportunities
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our world has changed.

Those who are working in what the PEI government deems as essential services are challenged by work overload and the call for social distancing and heightened hygiene measures, yet they are in constant contact with people.

Those who are working in what is deemed as non-essential services are either working from home or have been laid off.

In spite of all of these changes, we are still seeing jobs being posted, which is very good news. The jobs are for both essential and non-essential services.

On March 27, 2020, the Government of Canada announced tremendous support measures to help small businesses keep their staff and maintain their operations during this time.

We can only hope with the existing and future provincial and federal support measures, staff who have been laid off as a result of COVID-19 can return to work and more hiring will take place.

The job posting sites listed below advertise jobs that are available on PEI. Take a look through them all and if you have any questions about the site or as you do your research, email employ@employmentjourney.com
