Pastor Notes....

A Blessing for Fathers

As we draw near to June 21, I want to share a blessing for fathers that was posted by a pastor/friend, Clint Schneckloth, on his web page.

Gracious God,
pour out your Spirit on all fathers.
Grant to them keen insight into their children’s needs.
Help them to be faithful examples of truth and love.
Soften their hearts
so that they might hear their children’s cries.
Strengthen their resolve
to be men of commitment and faith.
In times of sorrow and disappointment
let them know that you are by their side.
In times of doubt and confusion
show them the way.
In times of happiness and joy
let them see your face
in all that is good and right and true.
In all times sustain them with the knowledge
that they are your beloved children.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Happy Father’s Day,
Pr.  Richard

WORD
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-13
Jeremiah accuses God of forcing him into a ministry that brings him only contempt and persecution. Yet Jeremiah is confident that God will be a strong protector against his enemies and commits his life into God’s hands.

Second Reading: Romans 6:1b-11
In baptism we were incorporated into the reality of Christ’s death and resurrection. We have been made new in Christ through his death and resurrection to live freed from sin.

Alleluia Verse - ELW 174
Holy Gospel: Matthew 10:24-39
Sermon - Pastor Richard Rollefson
Song of the Day - Take My Life that I May Be - ELW 583

Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

A couple in our congregation will match donations up to $2,000 made by members and friends to the SLO County Food Bank through June 30. The food bank is facing extra needs at this time and was thrilled to hear about the matching funds challenge.

Use this link to donate to the Mount Carmel matching funds challenge

If you prefer to donate to matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank to track.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!

Blood Drive Update

Thanks to all who participated in the blood drive on Tuesday. The local Girl Scouts co-sponsored with us and so all the spaces were filled and the blood bank met its goal! If you missed out, stay tuned.  We’ve been asked to hold another.
Have recent events been on your mind, but you don’t know where to start?  Are you feeling stuck in the left-hand column in the image above?  You are NOT ALONE.  And sometimes the best place to start is…right here.

Did you know that the ELCA is the whitest religious denomination in the United States?  According to data from
a 2014 Religious Landscape Study, the ELCA is about 96% white.  In 2019, an ELCA pastor named Lenny Duncan published Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S., spurring the nationwide church to finally begin to self-examine.  Join us for the opportunity for Mt. Carmel to be a part of this discussion!

On four Thursdays in July (skipping the middle Thursday because of the council meeting) at 6:30-7:30, we’ll be holding a book discussion group on Pastor Duncan’s Dear Church and you are invited to join.  If you can’t join the discussion, you are highly encouraged to read the book, but it is a text that is best processed in a safe, respectful discussion space.  To sign up or if you have any questions, please contact Monica at
monicajholman@gmail.com.

As a sort of mini-preview of the book, please read Pastor Duncan’s June 12 interview with NPR: Jesus Was Divisive: A Black Pastor’s Message to White Christians.
