20 June 2020
Dear Parishioners,
“East Side, West Side, all around the town.”
Governor Cuomo and Mayor De Blasio have announced that the City of New York will be prepared to reopen on Monday, June 22, allowing for Phase 2 of the state and city plans. New York City has hit all the health and safety benchmarks required to enter Phase 2.
This welcome news signals the next level of reopening of churches in the Boroughs of The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. I am overjoyed to bring you up-to-date on the information that I have received from the Archdiocese.
With the inauguration of Phase 2 of the state plan, the archdiocesan Faith Forward plan leapfrogs us to Level 4! [Level 2 allowed weddings and baptisms, and Level 3 weekday Masses and funerals. The northern counties of the Archdiocese have already reached Level 3.]
Now that we are entering Level 4, we can celebrate Sunday Mass in our beloved Church of St. Ignatius Loyola!

Signs of Hope in These Pandemic Days
by Maureen Fullam, RCIA Director
Though the desert came to us this Lent with closed churches everywhere and people suffering, we as a Parish found new and creative ways to be a community, reaching out to each other and to those in need. Like the nascent Church we see in the Acts of the Apostles, we also found light, meaning, and purpose in the presence of our Risen Lord.
The past three and a half months have been a journey of faith for St. Ignatius Loyola like no other as we dealt with the coronavirus. Without warning, lives have been lost and have been turned upside down as we lived with uncertainty and fear. At the same time, for many, these past months have also been a time of grace and transformation. And together we are experiencing signs of life and hope.
These days presented a unique challenge for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. When the necessary lockdown happened, we were entering the final period of preparation for reception into the Catholic Church for people never baptized and for those baptized coming into Full Communion with the Church.
How were we to continue as an RCIA community? Closed doors and social distancing to preserve health and safety could not mean that the heart of the Church was closed as well. Little did we know that these days would be luminous in an unanticipated way.

In his Friday, June 12th homily, Fr. Hilbert invites us to answer the "call[] to renewal. Renewal physically, now as we come, hopefully, to some resolution of this pandemic.... We are renewed in our spiritual lives, in our hope. And, we are renewed in our feeling of being isolated, of having no friends around us. We are friends here. We are in spiritual communion. We are not alone."
