> Peace Shop remains closed for now
Despite the Government allowing "non-essential" shops to reopen, Exeter CND council has discussed whether we should reopen the Peace Shop, and our opinion is that it is still too soon to do this safely.
Our shop space is so small that it would not be possible to maintain social distancing of 2 metres - the shop is only a little over 3m square (and that includes where the shelves are up against the walls); therefore in order to keep protecting the health of our shop volunteers and customers, and until the public health advice changes, the Peace Shop will remain closed for the time being.
We will be monitoring the situation as it develops and we'll let you know as and when things change. Hopefully we will be able to reopen in the not-too-distant future. Please keep an eye on our Facebook / Twitter / Instagram pages for any updates.
The good news is that we have received some business continuity support from the government's small business grant scheme so we are able to continue paying our rent and bills while the shop is closed to customers. When we do re-open, we will have the facility to take contactless card payments, which will help support social distancing by reducing cash handling.

> 40 years of Exeter CND
October 2020 will mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of Exeter CND. Before the coronavirus hit, we had hoped to be able to apply for a grant to hire an archivist to go through our historical documents with the intention of helping us produce an exhibition to mark 40 years of peace campaigning in this city.
Sadly, we've had to put those plans on ice for now. Hopefully we may be able to move forward with that next year, once life "returns to normal".
For now though, it would be great if you can share any old photographs or any other documents from our long history. Please either scan and email them to info@exetercnd.org or drop them off in the post to me and I can make copies. While the shop is closed, you can send them to my home address:

> Paper Cranes for Peace - a perfect summer project for kids of all ages (adults too!)
You may already be familiar with the story of Sadako and the paper cranes. Sadako Sasaki was a child victim of the Hiroshima atomic bomb in Japan in 1945. She was 2 years old when the bomb was dropped and, although severely irradiated, lived for another 10 years whilst ill with leukaemia. While she was ill in hospital, her father told her of a Japanese legend that if you folded 1000 origami paper cranes, you would be granted a wish. When she died, the paper cranes were buried with her.

When the Peace Memorial Park was created in Hiroshima, a statue of Sadako was created for the Children's Peace Monument, crowned with an origami crane made from metal wire.

All around the statue are placed big glass cases full of paper cranes: people from all over the world send strings of paper cranes that they have folded, and these are displayed there in those cabinets.

Exeter CND members and supporters have been folding cranes for some years now at our public events, and to mark our 40th anniversary, we are planning to send 1000 cranes to Hiroshima to go into the display. If you would like to fold some, follow this link to see the CND Peace Education booklet. This tells you more about the story of Sadako, and has instructions on how to fold them (on pages 14 and 15).
This link is to the CND Peace Education tutorial video, but you can find lots of others on YouTube if you search for "origami paper crane". You just need any square of paper to start. If you do manage to make 100 yourself, you can string them together yourself and send them to Japan - but if you only make a few, you can let us have them to join our collection, which we'll send in the autumn. You can flatten your cranes gently to get them into an envelope, and drop off to my address above.
