Hi there Friend,
It’s not a secret that Pride is different this year. On June 1, a day that ordinarily kicks off celebrations in LGBTQ communities worldwide, we found ourselves at the confluence of multiple mounting tragedies.
We know that LGBTQ youth are vulnerable, especially during these times. But we’ve continued to be here for LGBTQ youth through anything — connecting young people directly to trained crisis counselors 24/7.
Part of being here for LGBTQ youth is acknowledging Pride in a way that is respectful of the world they’re facing today. To do that, we are looking back on the history of Pride and what it has meant to the LGBTQ community in the last 51 years.
Pride was born from a riot: the Stonewall Uprising was led by large groups of LGBTQ people, including Black and Brown transgender women, and sparked the movement for LGBTQ rights. We honor all those who fought for our rights over the last 51 years and everyone continuing the fight for equality everywhere this Pride season.
