From Dean Andreas
Dear Friends,

I hope you are keeping safe and warm this mid-winter. On Sunday it will be the shortest day of the year and, in the Southern Hemisphere, that means that the feast of the birth of John the Baptist is near. At the time when the days are shortest, the sun stands lowest, it’s good to be reminded that John the Baptist was sent to proclaim that “by the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break on us to give light to those who sit in darkness” (Luke 1.78). That at the time when we celebrate the fulfilment of that prophecy, at our celebration of Christmas in six month’s time, the sun will stand at its zenith, filling this world with brightness and light.

One of the things that brightens up my week as the curve of Covid19 infections flattens in Victoria, is planning for the reopening of the Cathedral at the end of this month. Things that have given me particular joy is seeing our vergers putting stickers on the pews to indicate where people may sit once we reopen, and fine-tuning our admissions protocol. I am immensely proud of our team of colleagues during this time of preparation and I can’t wait to welcome you back to the Cathedral in person from Sunday after next. Andrew Victorsen has been in touch with details of how our booking and admissions system will work as long as Covid19 restrictions remain in place, and I encourage you to familiarise yourself with the new procedures. Thank you for your patience and your forbearance!

This Sunday, we are being joined by Canon Rosemary, one of our Chapter members and Chaplain to St John Ambulance Geelong. Usually we would also be welcoming members of St John Ambulance for their annual State Service. They will be joining us online, as we pray for and give thanks for their important work in our community. I am glad that we are able to meet together in this way and, as at every service, I look forward to reading your comments and feedback (after the service!)

Blessings to you this weekend, and all good wishes,

Dean Andreas

Notices

Opening for Sunday Worship - Sunday 28th June
Information regarding the re-commencement of Public Sunday Worship was sent to those on our congregational roll yesterday. If you are a regular member of the Cathedral Congregation and didn't receive the email, please contact the Cathedral Office. Due to the limited numbers of how many people can attend worship at one time, members of our congregational roll will be given first priority to book seats to attend. Any remaining seats will be advised in this Weekly Email for those would like to book. Please keep and eye on your inbox every Friday afternoon!

Annual General Meeting
The 2020 Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 28 June at 11am. An electronic copy of the Annual Report is available to view online here. Hard copies will be available in the Cathedral for when you next attend. In compliance with the health advice of the State of Victoria at the time of this edition’s publication, only fifty people may be in attendance in the Cathedral. To enable the full participation of all of our members, the AGM will be streamed live to our YouTube page, accessible via a private link which will be distributed closer to the time.

As usual we would like to invite Electoral Roll Members to submit their questions to the meeting in advance. This can be done in writing to welcome@stpaulscathedral.org.au. The deadline for question submissions is 25 June.
Planned Giving 2020/2021
It is that season of the year when we think about planned giving for the next 12 months. Envelopes for 2020/2021 will be available for collection as soon as services resume. Please let Dorothea know (derowse1@bigpond.com) if you will be requiring a box. I would, however, urge everyone who is currently taking envelopes to think again about setting up a direct debit on your Bank account or Credit card. You have absolute control; and it does ensure a regular flow of money to the Cathedral. Please also give prayer and thought to increasing the amount you have been giving. Once Federal financial support such as JobKeeper is phased out Cathedral finances will be very vulnerable indeed.
