A warm welcome to Multiple Disadvantage Matters, the newsletter from the Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) coalition.

During this unprecedented time, we're keeping you up to date with the latest policy changes, hearing about how you are responding locally, and learning more about how we can best support you at this time.
Updates 

Ask the Network series 

MEAM is producing a series of recordings and blogs focused on multiple disadvantage and COVID-19.

This week, we spoke to the legal team at Mind to find out about potential changes to the Mental Health Act. Visit the Ask the Network page to access all the recordings.

Flexible responses during Coronavirus

MEAM director, Oliver Hilbery, presented the findings from our recent report on local flexibilities developed during the crisis at last week's Homeless Link. You can watch a recording of the video here.

We will be holding an in-depth session for MEAM Approach and Fulfilling Lives areas to learn more about the research, and how it can support local transition planning, on June 30th. If you'd like to attend, please email Steve.

Substance misuse learning hub

We are holding an online learning hub on the afternoon of July 16th, focused on substance misuse and multiple disadvantage. Speakers will discuss government policies, best practice support and complexities for people facing multiple disadvantage. MEAM Approach and Fulfilling Lives areas can sign up here.
Latest policy news - COVID-19

Domestic Abuse Bill

Government ministers have written to Jess Phillips MP about issues raised relating to the Domestic Abuse Bill ahead of its second reading. 

Unpaid work and behaviour change programmes

The Lord Chancellor has confirmed that as part of the changes to the probation system, HMPPS will deliver all unpaid and behavioural change programmes from June 2021. 

Prisoners released NFA 

The Ministry of Justice has released figures showing that over 1,000 people leaving prison were released into homelessness between March 23rd and April 30th.

ONS research on poverty and COVID-19 

The Office for National Statistics has released research which demonstrates that people living in the most deprived areas are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 than the least deprived areas. 

Local Authorities receive £300m for Test &Trace

The government has announced that £300 million will be given to local authorities to develop and implement control plans in local areas.

Right to buy spending rules 

It's been reported that the government has extended the length of time councils have to spend income generated by right to buy sales of social housing, due to the slowdown in social housing construction during the pandemic. 
COVID-19 Resources from the sector

Latest from Clinks

Clinks has published a new blog about the recently announced changes to the probation system, along with the launch of the dynamic framework for commissioning services. The first seven successful applicants to its COVID-19 response grant, which is distributing funding from the MOJ and HMPPS, have been announced. 

Homeless Link updates

Homeless Link has published its Annual Review 2019, which documents key information about the state of the homelessness sector in England before COVID-19. 

News from Mind 

Mind is continuing to advocate for reform to the Mental Health Act and the implementation of the 2017-18 independent review of the Mental Health Act. 

Collective Voice 

Collective Voice is collecting evidence from stakeholders to submit to the ACMD's call for written evidence on young people's drug use and the provision of naloxone. 

Home Truths: Undoing racism and delivering real diversity in the charity sector

ACEVO and Voice4Change England have released a report looking at the experiences of BAME people in the charity sector and how to re-orientate the sector towards building a racially just society.

Expert Link Blog

Expert Link have a published a new blog about conversations they've had with over 100 people who have been offered support in the new COVID accommodation settings, about the support they've recieved and what should happen next.

Book review - The Prison Doctor: Women Inside

The Observer newspaper has published a book review of The Prison Doctor: Women Inside, which looks at the experiences of women in prison, trauma and mental health. 
Learning Opportunities

Clinks Annual Conference

Clinks will hold its annual conference "Making all the difference" on June 29th.  

Faculty for Homeless and Inclusion Health

The Faculty for Homeless and Inclusion Health will hold an online meeting to discuss how clinicians have care for  people experiencing homelessness and addiction during the pandemic. It takes place on June 23rd at 5pm.

COVID-19 and domestic abuse webinar

The National Lottery Community Fund will look at the impact the lockdown has had on victims of domestic abuse and the services that support them. It will take place on July 1st at 9.15am

Homeless Link webinars

On 8 & 9 July Homeless Link will be holding an online Rough Sleeping Conference. Additionally there is a training session on strengths-based practice on June 23rd at 2.30pm.
