Midweek Update for June 17

Conversations on Race and Faith

Racism is an issue that we as people of faith, people who follow Christ, are called to confront in our own lives and in our communities. Robin and Beth will co-lead small group opportunities throughout July that will provide space for us to study, pray, and grow together as we dialogue about issues of racism and discern together how to respond in faith to our call to be an anti-racist, pro-reconciling church.

Small groups are limited to 15 members each to provide for in-depth conversation. You can register for the small group that best fits your schedule by clicking on the group name below:

Zoom Movie Discussion Friday, June 19
After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian's life.

Just Mercy is streaming for free during the month of June. To see all the different platforms available to watch, click here. Plan to join us for a Zoom conversation at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19.
Be devoted to good works and acts of charity. – Acts 9:36

I’ve found FCC’s desire to work with the community to be inspiring. The church’s devotion to outreach is evident by the hands and feet that organize Thanksgiving meals, pack lunches for Backpack Buddies and volunteer their time with Lovelady.  But there is another side of FCC’s outreach that is not as visible. We have a very special local benevolence fund that helps families or individuals in need.

Our church receives calls from people desperate for food, gas money or even help paying for monthly prescriptions. We have a system set up to attend to those needs and help the individuals. The money that supports this mission is directly tied to the pledges and offering that the church collects. And the results of this hidden mission are life giving for someone desperate to get back on their feet.

FCC’s generosity touches many in our community. We are proud to be a source of hope and safety for those who need help. Thank you for your continued support of this very important mission.

We currently have $126,204.00 in pledges towards our budget goal of $410,000. If you have already made your pledge, thank you, if you haven't you can make your pledge online or download the pledge card here today and join the work of FCC in our community.
We will have our annual Congregational Meeting after worship on Sunday, June 28. The meeting will begin at 11:00 am on Zoom. This will be a brief meeting to discuss nominations and the annual budget. During the meeting participants will be given a link to a ballot to vote on nominations and the budget for 2020-2021. You must be present in the Zoom meeting to vote, so mark your calendar now.

The link to join by video is here, or you can call 1(312) 626-6799 and use the Meeting ID: 88975207553 to join by phone. If you would like help in connecting to zoom for the congregational meeting, please contact the church office at 991-5000. Make sure you join us on Zoom for this important Congregational Meeting.

Thank you for your continued support of the ministries of First Christian Church.
A visitation for Kenneth Champlin will be held Monday, June 22, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124 followed by a graveside service at Southern Heritage Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Those attending the visitation and service are encouraged to wear a mask.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations to First Christian Church be made in Ken's memory.

It has been wonderful to see our members during the passing of the peace. We want to add your passing of the peace video to our worship!  All you have to do is take a video (in landscape mode) of yourself and/or members of your family saying "May the peace of Christ be with you" and the answer "and also with you." Then email your videos to beth@fcc-bhm.org

Our worship is enhanced when people share their gifts. Would you be wiling to read scripture, offer a children's moment, lead the call to worship, or the call to offering? How can you share your gifts with FCC in worship? Just click the link below!

If you would like to participate in worship, please click here to sign up.
Non-Household Emergency Contact

FCC is asking that everyone provide a non-household emergency contact. This ensures that we can contact the appropriate party in the event that household members are unavailable during an emergency. Click here to fill out the form.
Office Hours Updated

Office hours are currently Tuesday-Thursday from 9 am - 4 pm. At least one staff member will be present during these times. The staff will continue to work remotely from home when they are not in the church office.

Vacation Bible School is one of our favorite experiences, and this year we want you to join us online July 13-17 to work together for creation. ReNew Vacation Bible School invites kids to learn about Jesus, help build our community, and grow as they become stewards of God’s creation.

At ReNew kids will:

  • Explore God’s Word through Jesus’ Parable of the Sower.
  • Learn about God’s creation and what we can do to care for it.
  • Meet members of our community who help our environment.
  • Have a great time!

You can register online and we’ll prepare a VBS kit for you and your family with all the supplies you need for a great week of Bible School. You’ll be able to pick up your kits at church the week before Bible School (we'll let you know when they are ready). Deadline to register and receive a free t-shirt in your kit is June 21st, so make sure you sign up today!
