June 2020
Dear ForBio members and associates!

We hope everybody is safe and healthy! At ForBio we continue to monitor the situation closely and are carefully planning activities on site and virtual for the summer and fall. This newsletter gives you an update on our course program with the latest courses and deadlines, as well as a lot of cool job opportunities.

We are super excited that our course with NIBIO on 'Genetic monitoring of arctic plant-insect networks’ in Svanhovd is set to run in the middle of July!

From 2020 we start accepting applications to ForBio course grants which enable our members to attend courses with a taxonomic focus that ForBio does not offer, but which are relevant for the current or future research interests and needs of our members.

Our upcoming Annual Meeting in Oslo has been postponed to December 2-4 in order to optimise participation from all Nordic countries.

ForBio: MSCA-IF Training Program [Virtual]
May 20 – September 9, 2020, Virtual
ForBio organizes its fourth training program for incoming and outgoing fellows applying for postdoctoral research grants from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA) Individual Fellows. The program runs from May 20th to the submission deadline of the H2020 MSCA-IF call on September 9th 2020. Each project concept will be assessed by two internal reviewers, and only those passing the assessment will be admitted into the program.
First deadline: June 25th 2020

Transmitting Science and ForBio: Introduction to Bayesian Inference in Practice [Virtual]
August 1721, 2020, Virtual
Bayesian methods have become standard practice in several fields, (e.g. phylogenetic inference, evolutionary (paleo)biology, genomics), yet understanding how this Bayesian machinery works is not always trivial. This course is based on the assumption that the easiest way to understand the principles of Bayesian inference and the functioning of the main algorithms is to implement these methods yourself.
No registration deadline, the number of places is limited

STI and ForBio course: Baltic macrophytes – systematics, sampling, species identification
September 612, 2020, Askö laboratory - Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre, Sweden
The course will present and provide an overview of macrophytes in the Baltic sea. It will cover the systematics, taxonomy and identification of different macrophyte groups, including macroalgae, phanerogams and bryophytes. Sessions will include lectures, fieldwork and laboratory exercises. The students will learn various techniques for identification and sampling.
Application deadline: August 1st 2020

ForBio and UiO: Mycology field course
September 711, 2020, Biological Station Drøbak, Norway
University of Oslo and ForBio are offering a field course focusing on the fungal diversity of eastern Norway. The two main aims of the course are to (1) acquire more knowledge about fungal diversity, fungistics and systematics, and (2) learn to use literature, stereomicroscope and microscopy to identify fungi based on micro- and macroscopic characters. We will also focus on the species ecology and phylogenetic belonging.
Application deadline: August 15th 2020

ForBio course: DNA barcoding - from sequences to species [Virtual]
September 2125, 2020, Virtual
DNA barcoding has found multiple uses in biodiversity science and management, as well as in authentication and bioinformatics. This five-day intensive course on molecular identification will give a basic introduction to the theory and best-practice of DNA barcoding in biodiversity science and management. Various topics will be presented by recognized experts in the field, and students will actively contribute to their own learning through hands-on exercises and seminars.
Application deadline: August 1st 2020

ForBio and University of Gothenburg workshop: Target capture for Illumina sequencing [Virtual]
September 28 – October 2, 2020, Virtual / Kristineberg Marine Research Station (depending on pandemic situation)
The Target capture for Illumina sequencing workshop will cover state-of-the-art methodology for generating DNA sequence data from multiple loci and individuals for phylogenomics and population genomics analyses. You will learn the complete process from designing a Next generation sequencing (NGS) target capture project, the most essential steps in the lab, and the bioinformatic processing of the produced data. The course is aimed to equip students with the necessary knowledge to design and carry out their own target capture project, and make sensible and informed decisions along the way.
Application deadline: August 15th 2020

ForBio and UiB course: Introduction to phylogenetic methods
November 9–13, 2020, University of Bergen, Norway
The is an introductory course that is aimed at students who will need to preform phylogenetic analyses in their work, but who have little or no experience with phylogenetic analyses.  The course will cover all basic aspects of phylogenetic analyses with emphasis on use of DNA data. Students will learn how to prepare their data, explore its properties and how to analyze it using distance, parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian methods. In the last two days students will also get an introduction to molecular dating with focus on the use of BEAST and to comparative methods used to study the evolution of discrete and continuous traits.
Application deadline: October 5th 2020

Funding opportunities

ForBio Course grants

These course grants enable ForBio members to attend courses with a taxonomic focus that ForBio does not offer, but which are relevant for the current or future research interests and needs of the ForBio member. ForBio will fund members based in Norway (http://www.forbio.uio.no/membership/). The grants can cover the course fee, travel and accommodation, and a detailed budget should be included in the application (grants are up to 30 000 NOK). Please note that we have a limited budget for travel grants and we will prioritize grant applications that most closely meet the objectives of this program. The application procedure requires you to fill out a ForBio course grant application. At the end of the form you will need to attach (1) a letter of recommendation from your main supervisor, and (2) a personal CV.

ForBio & Transmitting Science
ForBio organises some courses together with Transmitting Science (announced in the ForBio website). For these courses, ForBio will cover the registration fee for all accepted ForBio members. In addition, ForBio will cover travel and accommodation for ForBio members affiliated to Norwegian institutions. In order to benefit from this agreement, you need to indicate you are a ForBio member when registering through the transmitting Science website. A 30% confirmation fee may be required when registering; this will be reimbursed to ForBio members after the course.

ForBio members and associates also get a 20% discount on ALL Transmitting Science courses. You just need to indicate your ForBio affiliation when registering.
