Fossil Banks No Thanks

subscriber,

The East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is set to be the longest heated crude oil pipeline in the world; it will help open up one of Uganda's oldest and most visited National Parks to oil extraction, the oil it carries will accelerate climate change, it poses risks to the water resources of millions of people, and it will displace thousands. In short, it's bad.

The coming week is crucial for our campaign to stop this pipeline getting financed. Both Standard Bank of South Africa and SMBC Bank of Japan, the banks set to lead on a project loan for EACOP, have their annual meetings (AGMs) next Friday.

We will be delivering a petition to Standard Bank before the meeting, and we need as many people as possible to sign and share the petition before then.

So - we need your help to spread the word about the petition far and wide in the next couple of days before it is delivered, and at the same time build the pressure on these banks to pull back from financing this disaster project.

Why this campaign

With the support of more than 300 organisations and thousands of individuals around the world, the Fossil Banks, No Thanks! campaign is calling for an end to fossil fuel finance by private sector banks. The climate emergency means there must be an immediate end to the expansion of the fossil fuel industry and a rapid phase-out of all existing coal, oil and gas operations. Banks must urgently bring their financing in line with these aims. Read and share the Call on Banks at fossilbanks.org. Follow us on Twitter for daily #FossilBanks updates.

BankTrack is the tracking, campaigning and NGO support organisation targeting the operations and investments of commercial banks globally.
