Webinar Description

Anxiety is a common co-occurring concern for many people with IDD (including ASD). In this time of COVID, everyone is experiencing heightened anxiety. For this population in particular we need to be aware of this underlying anxiety and provide strategies to help people manage their symptoms. This panel presentation will describe how anxiety may present in people with IDD and demonstrate effective strategies to address these anxieties. Presented by Karen Weigle, PhD, Associate Director at Center for START Services & Jill Hinton, PhD, Clinical Director at Center for START Services joined by START program Clinical Directors and persons with lived experiences. Karen Weigle, PhD, Associate Director, Center for START Services
Dr. Weigle is a Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with people with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities and their families. She has extensive experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team and in several medical specialty clinics and wards, and has provided assessment and intervention services in a variety of contexts including in-home, school-based, clinic-based, agency-based, hospital-based, and community crisis response.

Jill Hinton, PhD, Clinical Director, Center for START Services
Dr. Hinton is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and mental illness. During her career, she has worked with both the Autism Society of NC and The Arc of NC in provision of supports to individuals and families across the state.

Group discussion
CET concludes with the START coordinator summarizing the discussion and recommendations

HEALTH CARE OF ADULTS WITH IDD DURING COVID-19

Adults with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD), such as autism and Down Syndrome, are not only more susceptible to COVID-19 but have also been facing greater challenges during the pandemic. Bringing together front-line clinicians caring for adults with IDD and researchers from a range of disciplines and medical specialties, this webinar series will focus on what has been learnt about this group in relation to COVID-19, the practical implications of their health, and how to move forward.
