New angles to consider COVID-19 in Africa

Dear reader,

This month we highlight three items that look at the pandemic’s impact on Africa from different perspectives:

Youth employment. Researchers undertaking studies on youth employment within the Boosting Decent Employment for Africa’s Youth programme must be mindful of the possible COVID-19 implications. This contribution by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), International Labour Organization (ILO) and INCLUDE highlights the learnings gained during this pandemic from a researcher's perspective.

Social protection and social safety net programmes have been promoted worldwide to mitigate the fall-out of lockdown measures. Being a theme at the core of INCLUDE’s earlier work, our knowledge managers were happy to reflect on the social protection measures that have been put in place in response to the pandemic.

Political economy. What needs to be achieved by African leaders to deal with the current COVID-19 crisis and beyond? In A ‘COVID revolution’ in Africa?, Abdourahmane Idrissa (ASC Leiden) breaks it down for you, based on an open letter to Africa’s leaders signed by prominent intellectuals, writers and academics from across Africa.

Assumptions in the Spotlight

The closing chapter of the New Roles of CSOs for Inclusive Development Programme is marked by Assumptions in the Spotlight, an online magazine that highlights how southern civil society organizations juggle their lobbying and advocacy roles in extremely complex environments. The findings contained in this brochure result from a fruitful collaboration between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NWO-WOTRO and INCLUDE, which allowed eight international research groups to show how the underlying assumptions of the Ministry’s Dialogue & Dissent policy framework are valid in specific contexts.

the investments worthwhile?
