SDGs Attainment and COVID-19 Pandemic:
Refreshing Local Governments' Commitment
12 June 2020 | JAKARTA – During the first half of 2020, the world has been focusing on tackling COVID-19. The fact that the global pandemic hitting cities ten years towards the Global Agenda deadline definitely inhibits local governments efforts in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UCLG ASPAC LOCALISE SDGs Programme supported by the EU refreshed local governments once again, particularly in Indonesia, on their commitment towards the sustainability of local development through a Web-Share discussion session on “Local Governments’ Commitment on SDGs Attainment after COVID-19 Pandemic.” Participating in the discussion session were representatives from the Ministry of National Development Planning, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and representatives of city and local governments in Indonesia. Key to Respond COVID-19 Pandemic to Backtrack SDGs Implementation through LGs in Pakistan
TO address the challenges and opportunities of COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan, UCLG ASPAC LEAD for SDGs Programme, in collaboration with UCLG ASPAC members and with the financial support of Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan, has been organising a series of webinars. The overall objective of the webinar series is to facilitate governments and other stakeholders to highlight and understand real issues associated with community’s empowerment, local development, SDGs implementation and service delivery. Asia Pacific Mayors Academy: Insights Sharing during COVID-19 and the Way Forward
28 May 2020 | BANGKOK – In supporting local governments’ efforts towards sustainable urban development, UCLG ASPAC has consistently promoted cooperation between governments and within the international communities. Joining the Asia Pacific Mayors Academy, an initiative of UN-ESCAP, UN-Habitat and UCLG ASPAC in collaboration with other partners that aims at developing capacity of local governments for sustainable urban development is, therefore, a strategic step to realise this vision. UCLG ASPAC, a permanent member of the Academy’s Advisory Board, scaled up the voices of Asia Pacific cities in facing coronavirus disease. Click

Integrating Climate Actions into Local Development Plans: Enhancement of Cities Climate Resilience
June 2020 | JAKARTA – Incorporating climate actions into development plans is essential. It helps ensure that hard-won development gains are not undermined and that future development interventions are resilient in the face of a changing climate. Being the Secretariat of Global Covenant of Mayors’ (GCoM) for Southeast Asia sub-region, UCLG ASPAC complies with GCoM Common Reporting Framework that requires a city to create Climate to Action Plan (CAP). UCLG ASPAC IUC Asia Team assists cities throughout the process; from developing the GHG inventory, assessing climate risks and vulnerability, defining mitigation targets and adaptation goals, to creating climate action plan. UCLG ASPAC Delivers Experience on Disaster Resilience Work at the UCLG CIB Working Group Annual Meeting
17 June 2020 | UCLG ASPAC, member of the UCLG’s Capacity and Institution Building (CIB) Working Group, attended CIB annual meeting held virtually last 17 June 2020 and shared what the organisation has done to assist local governments within the Asia and Pacific region in facing the impact of COVID-19. During the plenary session, Mr. Peter Knip, Director of VNG International and Chair of the CIB Working Group, recognised that the COVID-19 crisis has a huge impact on international cooperation work. Challenges include the limitations in travel and the refocusing of priorities to finance recovery programs of affected countries. Click
