Project Update
School Gardens

Volunteers help grow School District 72 gardens: We have been so happy with the amount of responses from people interested in helping to keep school gardens growing over the summer! We are doing orientations to the gardens over the next week, and already have some hands in the soil. The strawberries in the picture are from the Carihi Garden - just a few of the many containers that were picked that day, shared between volunteers and the cafeteria program's freezer.

Thanks to all of our volunteers, and the supportive school district staff who've helped make this work possible! Interested in supporting school gardens? Email volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca.

Campbell River Mirror - 'Volunteers needed to help at Campbell River school gardens'

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

We would like to acknowledge the Environment and Climate Change Canada's EcoAction Community Funding Program and the City of Campbell River's Community Partner-ships Fund for funding invasive species management in the Campbell River Estuary.

Japanese Knotweed | Please report sightings

Land owners are obliged to tackle Knotweed infestations until eradicated: Greenways is here to help. We running a FREE knotweed treatment program again with the City of Campbell River.
To successfully tackle 'the roots' of this noxious invasive plant, professional help is required over the run of multiple years. Knotweed roots (rhizomes) can spread up to 20m laterally. They can grow through concrete and asphalt and do extreme harm to, for example, foundations. Cutting it back or trying to dig it out will make its spread worse. Common herbicides are not strong enough to eliminate infestations.

IDENTIFICATION

Click HERE or on the video below if you need help to ID what you see on your property.

GREENWAYS IS HERE TO HELP

Email us at info@greenwaystrust.ca if you would like your knotweed infestation added to our FREE treatment list. Please indicate the amount of stems, the spread in square meters, height of the stems, the exact location on your property, your address, phone number, name and whether you are giving Greenways and it's contractors permission to access your property in the summer months. If you are already on our treatment list, please reach out to us via email with an update about the re-growth and the permission for us to come back this summer.

Something's Brewing!

Thanks to the volunteers who collected 30 kilos of spruce tips, our popular partnership with Beach Fire Brewing is currently fermenting. Stay tuned for tap dates! Beach Fire donates a portion of proceeds from each pint (or growler) to Greenways - can supporting local get any better?

Local Nature brought to Your Screen

WILD INSIGHTS: In our first two 'Greenways' Spotlight on Nature' videos we're bringing two #CampbellRiver favorites to your screen:

1. Beaver Lodge | How Beavers are transforming parts of the beloved greenspace and the effects on the ecosystem. Carl Morrison, Ecosystem Biologist from the Ministry of Forests, shares wild life camera insights and takes us 'behind the scenes' of the popular local forest.

2. Willow Point Reef | Ricky Belanger, Manager & Curator of our local Discovery Passage Aquarium explores the intertidal zone on the reef. The abundance of life on every square inch is mind-blowing. Marine life in every form, size, color - see for yourself!

We hope you will enjoy the virtual adventures! Let us know if you would be interested in more local video expeditions presented by Greenways. PS: The Discovery Passage Aquarium is NOW OPEN!

Meet Jamie and Katie

Our new team members are on board for the summer and already in full swing: Katie Lavoie and Jamie Lund. Both Biology majors from the University of Victoria, Katie graduated in the spring of 2019, and Jamie is in her last year.

Katie’s previous work experience has focused on Cetacean research data collection and educational outreach, as well as permaculture and sustainable food growing methods. Jamie, a Campbell River local, has a long history of work in herpetology, as well as experience in invasive species management, community outreach, and two summers interpreting at the Discovery Passage Aquarium.

Thus far, they have been spending a lot of time in the Baikie Island Nature Reserve. Removing invasive species, conducting Canada goose surveys, and tending to native plantings have been a priority. Katie and Jamie have also undertaken some administrative work by updating our mapping systems and website.

We are extremely grateful to have these two amazing ladies with us for the next months. We would like to acknowledge the generous Canada Summer Jobs [CSJ] funding from the Government of Canada!
