Unique UmbrellaWhat Makes Weston Unique?

There are loads of IT and tech support companies out there. We know that as well as anybody. We like to think we are a bit different. We believe we are a unique tech support company. Why would you choose to work with Weston? Here’s how we’re different.

Hurricane and COVID-related Phishing Scams

Scam AlertIt is Hurricane Season (officially) and COVID season is still with us, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. And with every natural disaster, pandemic, or other major traumatic experience, there is always some jerk that wants to take advantage of the situation. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) wants to make sure you watch out for COVID-19 cyber scams (including scams related to the economic payments). CISA also has a warning to remain on alert for malicious cyber activity targeting potential disaster victims.

CISA links to several resources to review to make sure you’re keeping yourself safe:

Weston’s CompleteCare helps prevent a lot of this kind of stuff from making it through in the first place, but you should always be vigilant whenever possible. Be sure to follow our advice on phishing to make sure you don’t click on something you shouldn’t.

Windows LogoAdjust Your Windows Startup Programs

Is there a program you never use that runs every time your computer turns on and you wish it wouldn’t? Is there a program you use a ton for your job and wish it would start up whenever you started your computer? There is a fix for both of those items. Here’s what you need to do.
OneNote and OneDrive Phishing Scams
Never a good sign to have two alerts like this in the same newsletter. We’ve seen this one come though a lot lately, and while our tools are getting better at blocking them, you still need to vigilant (like you do with every questionable email) to make sure you don’t fall victim.

In this latest phishing email scam, attackers appear to be using compromised email address books to send legitimate-looking emails from legitimate contacts you may have received emails from before. Inside the email you’ll see a legitimate link to an online document, using reputable third parties like Office 365’s OneNote or OneDrive tools, Evernote, Dropbox or Google Docs (which is why these frequently get past spam filters). Once you click onto the legitimate site, you’re presented with a link to an illegitimate document that is built to compromise your system or your account.

As always, watching out for these types of phishing attacks, especially if they look like you’re coming from somebody you know (a common spearphishing technique). If you have any questions about an email you receive, don’t hesitate to contact us immediately. You can read more of the technical details about this particular scam here.

Word and Excel LogoOffice Tip: Pin Your Files and Folders For Easier Access

If you’re like most of us, you have a certain set of Office documents that you need to open all the time. You also probably have certain folders that you frequently access from within Word or Excel. Did you know you can make those documents and folders easier to access within those programs? Here’s how you can pin files and folders to your Open and Save screens so you can get to them quicker and easier.

Outlook on Public Wifi Just Got Easier

Outlook LogoIf you’ve ever tried to browse the web on a public wireless network, you know that sometimes there are hotspot or login pages that make the process a bit trickier. We’ve featured NeverSSL before that makes the process a bit smoother if the network you’re connecting to has a wonky portal system. However, if all you’re trying to do is download and read email in Outlook, it may not be obvious that you need to log into a hotspot or login page in your browser to get your internet working. A new feature makes it easier to get connected.
