Advocating for and Learning About Equity
CaHPSA E-Newsletter ∙ Volume 2, Issue 1  June 2020

June has been a uniquely transformative month. We will not and should not forget the intensity and passion with which people around this nation and the world are rallying for change. Systemic oppression, racial injustice, and disparities have long persisted in this country despite many grassroots and coordinated efforts to enact significant reform. The frustration felt by so many for so long, in addition to the tragic and disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in recent months, are fueling and sustaining critical movements and campaigns rooted in equity. The power of action and persistent advocacy is clear. The momentum must be maintained.

Like many of you, CaHPSA members want to rise to this challenge. We are reflecting on this moment in our history and learning about concrete ways we can effect meaningful change to advance equity and equal justice. As health care advocates, we also know that health care system reforms are not enough. Fundamental changes in our society, including greater investments in communities of color, end of police brutality, adoption of racism as a public health crisis, and inclusion of immigrants in economic recovery legislation, must also be implemented to achieve a truly healthy and prosperous nation.

In this issue of the CaHPSA Newsletter, we share some of our recent advocacy actions and highlight a few resources that have helped us get more educated on matters of racial justice and disparities.

Please contact us to share any suggestions, comments, or questions you may have on how justice-oriented students can best meet this moment.

In solidarity,

CaHPSA

Some Ways We Have Taken Action

Urged Governor Gavin Newsom to declare racism as a public health crisis
We joined many advocacy organizations around the state to ask the Governor to issue an Executive Order to acknowledge effects of racism on population health, especially racism against Black Americans, and secure resources for anti-racism activities. We strongly believe racism is a public health issue.

Urged the Governor to include funding for Health4All Seniors in the final state budget
Health coverage for undocumented seniors, a vulnerable population, emerged as a priority especially in light of COVID-19. CaHPSA, CaPA, and our coalition partners are very disappointed that Health4All Seniors was removed from the budget and has been indefinitely postponed.

Asked state leaders to raise critical state funds from billionaires and wealthy corporations
We support the new Commit to Equity campaign, which calls for bold investments in our communities, schools, and health care. We want our lawmakers to stop balancing our state budget at the expense of communities of color and low-income people.

Endorsed the Schools and Communities First to support greater community investments
We need to prioritize our schools, communities, and essential workers. Schools and Communities First, which will be on the November 2020 ballot, would reclaim $12 billion for our local communities and close corporate property tax loopholes.

Called on the federal administration to not repeal the Affordable Care Act
Along with public health officials from around the country, we asked the federal government to not “terminate health care under Obamacare” as this would result in millions losing their health coverage during a raging pandemic. CaHPSA supports universal health care and the transition to a single-payer health care system. However, completely repealing the ACA at this time and under this federal administration would be disastrous.

Urged the Healthy California for All Commission to support single-payer
This commission is tasked with creating a plan for California to achieve universal health care through systemic reforms that may include single-payer. CaHPSA has publicly asked the commission to adopt a plan to implement single-payer, which would expand coverage to ALL people in our state.

Asked lawmakers to safeguard patients from skyrocketing health care costs
We urged legislators to vote yes on SB 977, which would allow more state oversight and regulation to stop harmful health care mergers that drive up care costs.

Called on legislators to protect comprehensive mental health coverage
By asking lawmakers to vote yes on SB 855, we joined advocates in highlighting the importance of comprehensive health coverage for those experiencing mental health and substance abuse disorders.
