June has been a uniquely transformative month. We will not and should not forget the intensity and passion with which people around this nation and the world are rallying for change. Systemic oppression, racial injustice, and disparities have long persisted in this country despite many grassroots and coordinated efforts to enact significant reform. The frustration felt by so many for so long, in addition to the tragic and disproportionate toll of COVID-19 in recent months, are fueling and sustaining critical movements and campaigns rooted in equity. The power of action and persistent advocacy is clear. The momentum must be maintained.
Like many of you, CaHPSA members want to rise to this challenge. We are reflecting on this moment in our history and learning about concrete ways we can effect meaningful change to advance equity and equal justice. As health care advocates, we also know that health care system reforms are not enough. Fundamental changes in our society, including greater investments in communities of color, end of police brutality, adoption of racism as a public health crisis, and inclusion of immigrants in economic recovery legislation, must also be implemented to achieve a truly healthy and prosperous nation.
In this issue of the CaHPSA Newsletter, we share some of our recent advocacy actions and highlight a few resources that have helped us get more educated on matters of racial justice and disparities.
