Dear <<First Name>>,

This week marked the 72nd Anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush and is Armed Forces Week. As many of you know, these are both causes incredibly close to my heart. I have descended from the Windrush Generation and I spent 26 years proudly serving our country in the RAF.  It therefore only seemed right that I made my Maiden Speech yesterday to pay tribute to both of these important matters.  I set out how honoured I was to be your elected MP and explained why I was driven by public service.  Most importantly, however, I outlined that I was in Westminster to champion Broxtowe in Parliament, serve your interests and would stand up for our local hospitals, vulnerable people and businesses.  Broxtowe is my home and I am committed to making it a better place to live for us all.  If you have not already seen it, you can view my Maiden Speech below.

Earlier this week, I also asked a question to the Home Secretary urging her to join me in recognising the contribution that immigrants, and their children, make to our country.  From helping to re-build our country after the war, to serving on the frontline in our NHS today, I am proud of the contribution that families - including people like my parents - make to the UK when they move here, work hard and make it their home. I was therefore thrilled to hear Priti Patel join me in paying tribute to both the Windrush Generation, and all other immigrants, on Tuesday.

As I am sure you have all seen, this week the Prime Minister announced further measures to ease lockdown.  This is incredibly welcome news and I know many of you who are eager to get back to work, spend time with loved ones and enjoy the summer will be as pleased as I am.  There is still a long way to go until we are fully back to normal, but it was reassuring to hear that we are well on our way.  For more information about the changes taking effect from 4th July 2020, please visit the Government’s website.  I have been contacted by many businesses, such as beauty salons and massage therapists, who are still waiting to hear when they can open. It is hoped that you will be able to safely reopen in mid-July, please be assured that I will continue to lobby the Government to issue more guidance as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, I will be hosting a ‘Virtual Coffee Morning’ to discuss climate change from 10.45am to 11.15am.  Protecting Broxtowe’s local environment was part of my six-point plan when I was elected and I am keen to hear your views on what we can do to make our area more environmentally friendly.  If you have not already done so, and would like to sign up, please email me by Sunday 28th June 2020 - writing ‘Climate Change Virtual Coffee Morning’ in the subject line - and I will send you a Zoom invitation at the start of the week.

I also have lots of upcoming meetings with local charities, including Women’s Aid and Forces in Our Community, over the next week.  Supporting local charities is incredibly important and I am so grateful for the work they do to support the most vulnerable in our community - especially in these unprecedented times.  As ever, if you are a local charity and could benefit from my support, my door is always open to you.  I also hope to use the upcoming summer recess to meet as many charities in the area to discuss how I can champion your needs in Parliament and support your excellent goals, so please do get in touch.

As I said this week, I am here to serve the people of Broxtowe so if you have any issues - no matter how small - please do not hesitate to contact my office and we will do our best to help you.

Best Wishes,

Darren
