Covid-19 cases
Data from Public Health England have shown a plateau in the number of cases recorded in Hackney and City in recent weeks. As of 24 June, there were 678 confirmed Covid-19 cases; 660 of these were in Hackney and 18 were in the City of London. Since the beginning of June, three new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Hackney and no new cases have been recorded in the City of London.
A recent Office for National Statistics Infection survey suggested that at any given time between 8 and 21 June 2020, around 0.09% of the English population had Covid-19 (95% confidence interval: 0.04% to 0.19%). Applying this to the 2019 population estimates for Hackney and the City of London, it is likely that there were, on average, around 253 cases (95% CI 56 - 338) in Hackney and 6 cases (95% CI 2 - 12) in the City of London during this time period.
As lockdown measures continue to ease, cases are likely to rise in line with increased contacts. At the height of lockdown, a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control estimated the average case had 2 to 3 contacts. As lockdown measures ease, we could see a return to the average 7 to 20 contacts observed pre-lockdown.

NHS Test and Trace programme
NHS Test and Trace is the national contact tracing system launched on 28 May 2020. This system ensures that anyone who develops symptoms of Covid-19 can quickly be tested to find out if they have the virus. Contacts of anyone who test positive are then identified, contacted, and provided with advice.
As of 25 June, 29 confirmed cases were traced through the NHS Test and Trace programme in Hackney. For these, 39 contacts were traced - an average of 1.3 contacts per case. This is an increase from the average 0.6 contacts traced per contact as of 11 June.
The most recent national figures from the Department for Health and Social Care showed that between 11 and 17 June, an average of 3.6 contacts were traced and contacted per case in England.
In addition to the 39 NHS Test and Trace contacts in Hackney, 45 contacts were identified via the London Health Protection Team. A total of 69 (81%) of these contacts have been contacted, received advice, and completed the necessary NHS Test and Trace forms.
Hackney and the City of London are relying on NHS Test and Trace to monitor the nature of the pandemic in the local area. Using this information, we can carry out preventive work to mitigate the spread of the infection and provide support to vulnerable individuals.
