Contact tracing: How cities can improve public cooperation

Contact tracing requires loads of telephone calls, in-depth case-history investigations, and the ability to persuade people who’ve been exposed to quarantine themselves at home. Success depends not only on the contact-tracing team, but also on the people being contacted. But what if those people don’t answer the phone? What if they’re worried about privacy? What if they can’t remember who they’ve been in contact with? Not all cities run their own contact-tracing programs—many are led out of county or state government—but there are steps every city can take to improve public participation in this critical COVID-fighting tool.

Making the most of Management Metrics for Cities resource

In the past three months, city leaders across the country have grown comfortable reciting local data on COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, ventilator usage, and more. As the pandemic evolves, however, so do the metrics they need to master. That’s why Bloomberg Philanthropies last week released a guide to COVID-19 Management Metrics for Cities. Developed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and What Works Cities, the guidance is meant to help mayors and their lieutenants track the right data points to keep tabs on how the pandemic is impacting their cities over time and make informed decisions as the crisis continues. To find out more about these new resources, we caught up with Beth Blauer, executive director of the Centers for Civic Impact at Johns Hopkins.

NEW ENFORCEMENT MEASURES AS CASES RISE

Additionally, mayors are finding innovative means to address budget shortfalls and jump-start local economies. GLOBAL OUTLOOK
  • The mayors of all three municipal corporations in Delhi, India, say that fighting COVID-19 is their foremost priority.
  • Florianópolis, Brazil, recloses as the mayor vows that there will be no second wave there.
  • London Mayor Sadiq Khan is planning to move the mayor’s office and the Greater London Authority out of the iconic City Hall building in an effort to address the city’s expected £500-million COVID-related budget shortfall.
Inspired: Sister-city support

Cheyenne, Wyo., has been sister cities with Taichung, Taiwan, for more than 30 years. And this week, that decades-old bond resulted in a gift of 3,500 N95 masks—from Taiwan to the Wyoming capital city. “Though miles apart, we stand together for the better good and health of our people,” Cheyenne Mayor Marion Orr wrote in a tweeted thank-you note.
