National Leaders in the Mental Health Aspects
of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Congratulations to I-START and NY START Region 3!

Two programs in our network who provide Clinical Team services recently achieved significant program certification milestones. Clinical team program certification is obtained when a START program consistently demonstrates a proficiency in meeting established standards of practice that are consistent with national START model elements. To meet model fidelity and achieve certification, programs must meet standards in the following focus areas: 1) Evidence-Based Practice, 2) Primary Services, and 3) Clinical Services.

I-START began providing START services in Iowa in 2014, serving adults ages 18 and older. They began as a very small, grassroots effort and were spread out across the central part of the state with minimal resources. Yet their commitment to quality clinical services has set the bar for other programs nationwide. In the family interview, which is a core component of the program certification review, a parent described the I-START team as “freakishly available,” always there to assist and empower her son, their family, and support system, including outreach to local law enforcement and local comic book stores where her son likes to visit. I-START’s commitment, perseverance and hard work led to achieving National START Program Certification this month.

NYSTART Region 3 received their National START Certification 1 year ago and recently obtained their program certification renewal, which is valid for two years. This team supports people across the lifespan (ages 6-up) and provides clinical team services. The Region 3 team’s ability to network and support many across their community through quality services, training and outreach is a testament to their positive attitude and commitment to the START model. Bridging the gap between IDD supports and MH services has been a focus for Region 3, and they have definitely built capacity in their region, which includes the Capital District, Taconic and Hudson Valley areas of New York. Their continuing adherence to the START model as resulted in receiving a 2-year certification renewal.

Congratulations to I-START and NYSTART Region 3 for providing exemplary, evidence-based services and supports that clearly adhere to the START network’s mission and values!
