President's Message

It has not only been a blessing but inspiring as well seeing the numerous interactions between APLP alumni recently.  Many of these interactions took place on zoom calls by APLP generations as well as participating in virtual programs organized by the EWC Leadership Program.  Despite many of us living in lockdown situations during these last few months we are still able to make use of technology to bring ourselves closer together and continue critical learning.

APLP ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. EWC Staff Message

All of our communities are in different levels and stages of feeling Covid-19 impacts. As has been said, we are all in this global storm, but we have different boats. Some of you are dealing directly with sickness in your homes, others as first responders to sickness and the many resulting issues. Many others are feeling economic impacts and all must cope with the physical and mental stress of social distancing. Maybe we can’t know how it feels to be in your boat, but we want you to know that we are next to you in these rough waters. Cheering you on, ready to support you, and keeping you close if not physically than in every other way.  We are inspired by the work you are doing in your communities to protect the vulnerable and lead through this change too many to name and not leave out but it spans across all 42 countries the LP ‘Ohana represents. We hope your EWC experiences and lessons buoy you, bring hope (the right kind, says Nick), and provide the confidence and skills you need now.
2. Leadership Program and BLM

We stand by the EWC President’s statement and want to specifically say to the APLP ‘Ohana that the LP team remains committed to cultivating leaders from across the Asia Pacific region with the moral character and will to transform their communities and pursue equity and inclusion. We re-commit ourselves to continuing to learn about the many ways racism affects us, our lives, and our work. We commit to examining and working to undo the systems of oppression that have violated Black people, indigenous people, and other people of color.

We know the strength of the Leadership Program `Ohana is in our diversity and our shared vision of promoting better relationships and understanding among peoples and nations. We recognize this vision is important, and must be relentlessly pursued. We acknowledge that we can do better, and will pursue more courageous conversations, just as we encourage our leadership fellows to do. This will include conversations within our team and our organization focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will examine the topics we teach and the materials we use to teach them, and commit to ensuring both are in service to a more just global community.

Please join us in this essential conversation.

3. LP Virtual Workshops and Change Leadership Certificate

We’ve been totally amazed at how successful and popular you’ve made our LP Virtual Workshop series! We’re proud of the LP team for pivoting quickly (just two weeks after the Covid-19 stay-at-home order in Hawaii) to upskill and offer online programming. Two months later we hosted, together with many of you, 21 offerings for 373 alumni and their colleagues from 22 countries. About 70 of you completed the 4-week Change Leadership Certificate with a team (see their Think Pieces on LinkedIn at #EWC_LPChangeLeadership), achieving a completion rate 23 times higher than the average rate for Harvard and MIT’s 2017-18 Mass Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Proud of everyone that committed to their, their team and their communities development. We’re rebooting for the next iteration and want work even more collaboratively with you. For those that missed round one, be on the lookout for what’s next!

APLP AROUND THE WORLD

 APLP Alumni Virtual Pau Hana
Blaine Baldwin (G5)

During the last quarter and mostly in May at least 18 of the 19 APLP generations held a Virtual Pau Hana.  These were by all measures an outstanding success.  At least 14 of the generations had ten or more alumni participating.  There was a generation that had 22 attendees participating at one time.  At least one generation had participants from six different continents that joined their Virtual Pau Hana.  Many thanks to Dr. Nick Barker for sharing a great video that was shared among attendees and on the APLP alumni Facebook page.  The feedback from this event was very positive with hopes that many more APLP Alumni Virtual Pau Hana's will take place moving forward.  In all at least 225 of our more than 600+ alumni joined in on the various calls.  Finally, a special thank you to all alumni who took the time to set up these calls and to the alumni & guests that were able to attend.  Let’s continue to tighten our bonds within each generation as well as the APLP as a whole!

New publication on Leadership and CLIL
Yukiko Abe, G17

In March 2020, I published a new academic article on Leadership and CLIL in the J-CLIL (Japan CLIL Pedagogy Association) Journal, Vol.2. The article explains how I used the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology at my universities. In the paper, I examined how CLIL can be applied to leadership training based on my learning at the East-West Center and on teaching experience in the U.S. and Japan. The paper includes my classes with Ms. Shabana Basij-Rasikh (my G17 peer, Shugufa’s great sister), President of the School of Leadership, Afghanistan, an Afghanistan-led private boarding school for girls. She gave a new perspective and encouragement to my young promising students in Japan via Skype® in 2018 and 2019.

The EWC staff members and my G17 colleagues, especially Joyce, Melody and Shugufa, kindly assisted and encouraged me in the writing of this article.  I thank all of you for your very kind assistance. You can find my article here

APLP PERSONAL UPDATES

The COVID-19 and Widened Public Space
Suresh Tamang, PhD [G7, Nepal]

COVID-19 has changed the lifestyle, work nature and daily performance of millions globally. Personally, I saw an increase in job roles; besides ongoing research, I was able to brainstorm and conduct relevant studies, such as daily life in lockdown and changed health care services in Nepal.

However, this time has allowed me the opportunity to read, write, speak, and widen my public space. The past 3 months have been productive, with multiple articles (in English & Nepalese) related to COVID, social welfare, healthcare, food and lifestyle. I also participated in talks and interviews about the current crisis, from an ecological/holistic perspective. Additionally, I wrote a review of a best seller based on the historical racial decimation of a widow 100 years ago, when Nepal was under an autocratic Rana Regime.

I spent time with family, and documented it on video. Social media played a big role in my lockdown life, as I continuously advocated about current issues including racism and COVID-19’s impact, and also increased my network drastically.

Revival of Feeling of Community
Manoj Kumar (G19)

At this time of unprecedented pandemic there have been some positive signs of change for humankind. After every catastrophe, there are new developments and evolution. Just as after the Second World War new global institutions were formed to avoid such human tragedy again, similarly this pandemic has also forced all of us to revisit our relationships at the family, state, nation and  global levels. During lockdown, we all took a break and cherished our relationships by spending some time together, helping neighbors and destitute people. Statesmen and diplomats huddled their heads together to build plans that may work beyond national borders. There has been a strong realization by all of climate change, sustainability, and health care. In addition, different international groups are all also working together by financing and exchanging technical expertise in developing vaccine for this pandemic. This unprecedented tragedy has revived a sense of community that has diminished in the last 70 years and is a strong hope that it grows even stronger.

Personal updates
Chris Ovitt (G3)

Aloha my friends! I have a gmail which may be the way I go in the future new normal. Hawaii has been doing relatively better dealing with the coronavirus. We are still closed but people can get in. The rail project continues but as we head into election season it will be a hot topic with over half of the stations left to go to Ala Moana. As part of the team prepping for rail operations, expectations are high but doing my best to impart my leadership values. System is driverless like Vancouver but persons with experience from Thailand’s rail could be valuable as well. Hitachi of Japan and Andaldo of Italy have teamed up which I think is a good thing as private operators are on site.

Wishing all of you my warmest aloha and best regards,
Chris Ovitt
