Adelphi Friends Meeting

June 30, 2020

We Need to Talk...

Meeting together again?  Much to consider.

Please join in one of these four scheduled sessions for shared reflection about what our next steps might be for resuming any kind of in-person gatherings at the Meeting House.

The sessions will be held via Zoom on:
  • Tuesday, July 7, at 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 8 at 10 a.m.
  • Saturday, July 11 at 10 a.m. and
  • Sunday July 12 at 4 p.m.
There is no need to sign up ahead of time; connection info will be sent out to everyone closer to the date (i.e. next Tuesday for the first two sessions, and next Friday for the Saturday and Sunday sessions.)  Please just find one that will fit in your calendar and plan to join in. It is important for as many of us as possible to reflect together on the many questions that come up as we look ahead.

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, about these sessions please contact Carole Hoage or Cheryl Morden.

Living into Anti-Racism in our Faith Community

Adelphi Meeting's Change Group offers three opportunities to support learning and action against racism:  an accountability group, a book group, and some movie and discussion nights.  See the descriptions and contact information for each opportunity here. (Google doc.)

BYM STRIDE is offering a screening of Baltimore Rising, a documentary about the aftermath of the 2015 uprisings following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. The screening will be followed by a discussion. The movie is not rated and runs 92 minutes. Join in on Thursday July 2nd at 6:30pm via Zoom:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85793956891 Facebook event here.

BYM's Peace and Social Concerns Committee convened a dozen or so Friends representing BYM's several anti-racist entities (Growing Diverse Leadership Committee, STRIDE, Working Group on Racism, Reparations Action Working Group, and more) to write a Call to Action, a list of practical actions against systemic racism for meetings and individuals in BYM. The group will be collecting responses and suggested resources here.

American Friends Service Committee is offering an 8 week-course, Radical Acting in Faith for White People, beginning July 9. The program alternates between core sessions and small group discussions, and requires reading, journaling and preparation for each session.  Registrations are still being accepted at the link above.  Readings and preparation required for the first core session are also provided at that link.

National Museum of African American History and Culture has created a web portal, "Talking About Race," offering a wide range of resources supporting eight foundational topics.  Check out their opening questions (e.g. "when did you first learn about race?") and their definition of anti-racism, which begins:"Being antiracist results from a conscious decision to make frequent, consistent, equitable choices daily..."  There's a lot to explore here.

The Friends Wilderness Center is a 1400-acre wilderness site, minimally developed, and now open for day hikes and rustic overnights. If you'd like to get out and re-acquaint yourself with nature, you might consider the Wilderness Center.

To Submit an Item for Silent Announcements

Send a message to the editor via an on-line form. Provide essential information (date, time, etc.). Feel free to add informal notes in the description box.  The editor is probably going to edit it anyway.

During the pandemic, Silent Announcements are sent out on Tuesdays and Fridays at about noon.  Please submit items before 10 a.m. on those two days.

To Schedule a Virtual Committee Meeting

Send the info below to:  Zoom2@adelphifriends.org

Your e-mail should include at least the following information:
(1) the title of the meeting (e.g. Finance Committee meeting),
(2) the date and time,
(3) recurring or one time only – if it is recurring, what is the schedule (2nd Tuesday of the month), including beginning and ending dates,
(4) contact person, and
(5) any special considerations (e.g., you need a technical person to help out or to host, you need someone to control breakout rooms).

Note that the specific Zoom invitation info for these committee meetings should NOT be put in Silent Announcements.  Instead put in the Silent Announcement a contact person who will forward the zoom invitation to the committee members.  You can also just send the zoom info directly to the committee members without a Silent Announcement.
