Update & Events

March 10th seems like forever ago.  We held a very well attended TCD nite at the Royal Oak Brewery, and news coverage had started, but none of us would have expected what was to come.

It's been a long 3 months since then, but the season is finally underway.  There isn't a better way to social distance than on a motorcycle!

On June 14th, we had 23 bikes and 25 riders for the Detroit Urban Tour.  We switched the routes up a bit for this year to add in some new parts of the city. Thanks to John Harte our intrepid explorer for laying it out for us. Breakfast was not in the cards for us, so we met in Eastern Market for a two-hour ride through Detroit.

Eastern Market Grafitti

We saw Eastern Market, Indian Village, Belle Isle, Downtown, remnants of Joe Louis Arena, the Ren Cen, Delray, River Rouge, Zug Island, Mexican Town, the Train Station, Detroit PAL field, and Corktown. Some city jewels and some places not often traveled.

Last weekend, we gathered once again at the Cycle-Moore Campground in Interlochen, Michigan for the upteenth TCD Longest Day Ride.  We had 14 riders and two guests (good to see you, Ruth!).

With the potential group size restrictions, we decided to forgo the traditional dinner(s) at the Hofbrau in Interlochen and opted to cook everything at the camp.  It was a ton of fun. We just might want to continue it as a new tradition.  Our VP kept making grocery runs, so there was plenty for everyone.

A contingent of riders made their way to camp on Thursday night.  The rest rode up on Friday morning. The group did have more ADV riders than on-road this year.  Typically, it's split pretty evenly.  The GS guys take more photos, so you'll see more of them here.

First rule of riding through mudholes, send your friend first.

On Saturday, the road crew took off for Petoskey, and the ADV riders set off for a circumnavigation of the Leelanau Peninsula. The ADV plan was to stick to roads mostly and just take a couple of scenic dirt roads along the way.  One thing led to another and pretty soon we were wallowing like pigs in a bunch of mudholes.  It seems to always happen like that.

Leland Fishtown is almost underwater.

The roads, weather, and great friends made for yet another awesome weekend in Interlochen.  After recent events, it was pretty special.

Thanks to Kevin once again for the photos and videos.  It takes a lot of effort to stop and setup all time time.  We appreciate it.

UPCOMING:

July 5: Washtenaw ADV -  Explore the dirt backroads of Washtenaw, Lapeer, and Jackson Counties. Great gravel road routes.  The ride is all on maintained dirt roads (and a little pavement).  Always a fun and scenic ride.

Meet in the Pinckney, MI town square at 10:00am on Sunday, July 5th.  The ride is scheduled to start at approx. 10:00 a.m. from the east side of the town square.  The ride will end at approx. 1:30.  GPS track will be posted in the GPS forum on the website, please download it if you have a chance.

We try to have many small groups of riders - this is not designed to be a big group ride.  So, the more people with the track, it allows us to break it up more. This is also a good opportunity to work on your GPS skills.  Hope to see you there!

July 9-12: Ohio Windy 9 Ride - The plan is for two days of Ohio twisty pavement or for GS crowd two days of gravel touring.  Some have chosen one day of each.  Routes are not final yet, but the current plan is for the road riders to do the Hocking Hills on Saturday and 555 on Sunday.  Greg C. is developing the gravel routes.  All routes will be posted in the GPS forum.

For those riding down on Friday, watch the forum for a meeting location.  You can still do the area rides if you can show up at the Hampton Inn Saturday morning.

Make your motel reservation at the Hampton Inn Zanesville.  Phone is 740-453-6511, the address is 1009 Spring St, Zanesville OH 43702.  There are a few restaurants nearby and some other motels if the Hampton doesn’t work for you.

July 19: Ice Cream Ride - We depart from the Pinckney Masonic Lodge at 10:00 am to a notable ice-cream parlor within an hour or two.  This year we will return to The Parlour of Jackson. Opened in 1915, they claim to serve the largest portions of ice cream in Michigan.  We're always looking forward to someone trying the “Dare To Be Great” sundae challenge, which requires a person to finish 21 scoops of ice cream; if completed in an hour then the ice cream is free! 1401 Daniel Road Jackson, Michigan 49202.  GPS route will be posted.

July 23-26:  Indiana Covered Bridge Ride - Two days of riding through and around bridges in mid-western Indiana.  This is a non-technical gravel ride.  Indiana can pile the gravel deep, but these are public roads. This will be a motel ride.  Details will be posted in the forum on the website.
