Ghost Light Masquerade

Playing into the “haunted vibe” of the Tenth Avenue Arts Center, and San Diego’s love of the modern-day speakeasy, The Rosin Box Project presents Ghost Light Masquerade, a virtual promenade theater performance. The virtual experience traverses through the haunted corridors of the Tenth Avenue Arts Center, and guests may explore the scenery around them (the entire experience is filmed using a 360-degree camera), creating their own adventure as they find dancers performing on various stages and in dark hallways.

This is a free, non-competitive weekly film festival open to anyone with time on their hands and an itch to create something during all this mess. San Diego Symphony Pays Tribute
to Essential Workers

By Cori Wilbur

June 25, 2020

“Jack shall have Jil

Nought shall go ill;

The man shall have his mare again,

And all shall be well.”

- William Shakespeare, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,”
Act III, Scene II

As a “thank you” to all of the essential workers in San Diego, and everywhere else, who have selflessly fought during the pandemic to keep us safe, the San Diego Symphony decided to come together, to virtually perform Mendelssohn’s “Nocturne”, in a gesture of support and appreciation. Music Director for the Symphony, Rafael Payare, felt this piece of music and featured quote from Shakespeare were a great way to convey the community’s gratitude for these workers and hope for a united future.

Kelsey Buller, Public Relations Manager for the Symphony, said that one challenge of creating this performance, was how to configure the same synergy of being on stage together, while being separated at home. However, the musicians of the Symphony rose to the challenge and provided a beautiful homage to these workers who allow us to still play our music and create our art. Featured images for the compilation were sourced through a call-out to staff, volunteers, musicians and local organizations.

San Diego Art Institute Shows Up
for the BIPOC Arts Community with RAM

While we have all adjusted to social distancing and continue to avoid large gatherings, we are finding new ways of connecting. Whether it is through Zoom or conference calls we are reaching for new ways to stay connected with one another.

On this particular day, my partner was on a Zoom call with his coworkers, which resulted in my having to sit in my car on an 85-degree day in San Diego for a conference call with San Diego Art Institute’s Executive Director, Jacqueline Silverman and Director of Product and Development, Caleb Rainey.  The ice broke quickly as we all shared and laughed about the exact location we were in in order to take the call.

After our introductions, we didn’t hesitate to discuss the global and local impact of Covid-19 and Black Lives Matter. During a time of uncertainty, San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) didn’t hesitate to acknowledge the importance of this social uprise and took the time to give Black, Indigenous, Queer, and artists of color the platform they needed to thrive. “We are committed to making a platform of equality and inclusion for artists’ voices in the time we live in,” Silverman says.

In the midst of a global pandemic, the art world froze, uncertain how to carry on. For a global perspective, UN News reports that while 90% of museums are temporarily closed, 13% of those face the likelihood of never reopening.
