Government's updated guidelines on 'shielding'

The Government now believes the latest evidence indicates that the prevalence of Covid-19 in the community has continued to decline and has reviewed its guidance on shielding, recognising that the advice to those shielding has been challenging to follow and that it will take time for those affected to adjust and return to normal daily life.

From 6 July, the clinically extremely vulnerable may, if they wish:
  • Meet in a group of up to 6 people outdoors, including people from different households, while maintaining strict social distancing.
  • No longer observe social distancing with other members of their household.
  • In line with the wider guidance for single adult households (either an adult living alone or with dependent children under 18) in the general population, form a ‘support bubble’ with one other household. All those in a support bubble will be able to spend time together inside each other's homes, including overnight, without needing to socially distance.
This is a small advisory change that brings those affected a step nearer others in their communities. However, all the other current shielding advice will remain unchanged at this time.

Taking care of Business – Supporting Unpaid Carers

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, more people than ever are providing care unpaid for their elderly, sick or disabled family or friends.

Previously, it was estimated that 1 in 7 staff were juggling work and unpaid care. New research by Carers UK suggests that nationally a further 4.5 million people have become carers since the outbreak began, therefore numbers of working carers will now be significantly higher.

As employers begin to safely reopen workplaces to staff, it is more important than ever that they know how to support unpaid carers to balance work alongside crucial caring responsibilities.

Wakefield Council has produced access to free information and resources to help employers to support working carers in the workplace, which can be accessed on the Wakefield Council website.

Extraordinary Home Office funding for vulnerable children's charities
Deadline extended to: 6 July 2020
Further to the Chancellor’s announcement of £750m funding for the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector, the Home Office has secured additional, emergency support funding for small/micro charities that are working with vulnerable young people at risk of being involved in serious violence.

On 22 June 2020, the Home Office notified us that based on the existing 20/21 VRU funding formula, West Yorkshire VRU has been allocated an additional £285,168 to provide to small/micro charities (defined as those having an income less than £100,000 per annum). This emergency funding is contingent on it being provided to secure critical frontline services affected by Covid-19.

West Yorkshire organisations eligible for funding must be registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, or a social enterprise; this includes companies limited by guarantee and community interest companies.

Tesco Bags of Help
Deadline: No deadline given
Tesco Bags of Help has responded to the current Covid-19 crisis by setting up a new fund to support local communities.

The programme will provide a single payment of £500 to organisations who are supporting vulnerable groups, as part of their emergency response in supporting local communities.

Typically, the fund will support organisations that have experienced:
  • Increased demand – a holiday hunger club needs more resources to support children through the summer months or a food bank whose stocks are running low and needs an immediate donation to enable the food bank to restock.
  • Disrupted services – a local charity setting up a delivery service to replace its monthly lunch club, or a charity needing to set up a telephone service to support beneficiaries.
  • New services – a health focused charity having to set up a new online patient service requires new IT equipment or a mental health charity developing a new service.
For more information, and to apply, please visit the Tesco Bags of Help website
